CHAPTER 10: Late Night Meetings And A Strange Encoun
There was a spring in her step, as Bondita walked back to her dormitory after the enlightening discussion with Shikshak Babu. He was so inspiring! So much like her own Sakha Babu!
That evening, Mimi and Bondita were approached by David.
“Err… I don’t know how to say this”, he started.
“People usually use their mouths to say something”, Mimi quietly commented.
David’s face flushed red. “Yeah. Right, so, uhh… using my mouth… err, I mean- I need help!”, he finally burst out.
“What kind of help?”, Bondita asked keenly.
“With my… homework”, he replied. “I have no one else to help me with it. So, would it be possible for you to, you know, help me?”.
“Yes, of course! I and Mimi haven’t completed our homework too! So we can do it together”, Bondita said, cheerfully.
David walked away after agreeing to meet them in the library. It was only then, that the fact that Mimi had predicted the same thing in the morning, registered upon Bondita’s mind. She gasped.
“Mimi! How did you know, that David was facing troubles in doing his homework?”, she asked in wonder.
“Did I? Maybe. Don’t know how I knew it. Just knew it. Sixth sense, I guess”, Mimi replied, grinning.
————————
Tik.Tok. Tik. Tok… The ticking of the clock resounded throughout the room. Whoosh. A gentle breeze blew in through the window, lulling the lone occupant of the room, to sleep. Sampoorna sighed in her sleep.
But suddenly, THUD!…
Sampoorna woke up with a start. She flicked her bedroom light on. There was another crash. This one lower in sound, than the other. ‘The sound is coming from the kitchen’, she thought. She stepped out of her bedroom, and followed the source of noise.
On her way, she grabbed a cricket bat and proceeded forward cautiously, without making a sound. As soon as she reached the kitchen, she saw a figure, crouching down near the window.
Without a thought, she raised the bat and brought it down, smacking the figure as hard, as she could.
“Ouch! Damn!”, the man groaned loudly, in pain. Without a second thought, Sampoorna once again raised her bat, ready to smack him once again, when he made a gesture for her to stop, and said, “Wait! I can explain”, he said.
Sampoorna frowned. ‘Why does he sound so familiar?’.
“You can explain? So can I. You broke into my house, just now. You’re lucky my Maa-Baba and Pishi are not home. Or else, you would have been beaten black and blue, by now”, she said.
The man nodded his head and got up, rubbing his shoulder, where she had hit him.
As soon as Sampoorna turned on the light, Saurav Munshi’s scrunched up face came in front of her. She gasped out loud.
“Saurav! What are you doing here?! Oh God! I hit you so badly! Are you ok? First tell me, why on earth were you HERE, at this time of the night?”.
“Relax! Calm down Sampoorna. I’m okay. And as to how I ended up here… That’s quite a story. Well, I thought this was the safest place, because it was nearest, and also, you had told me, that you were home alone today. And thank God for that! Otherwise, the Roy Chowdhury mansion and my home, both are a bit far”, he said sighing.
“Oh. Okay. But what do you mean by safest place? And what exactly were you running away from?”, Sampoorna asked, motioning him to sit down and bringing a glass of water for him.
Saurav seated himself, and took the water gratefully. “You’re a gem, Sampoorna!”, he stated, smiling.
“Yes, well, whatever”, she brushed it away, though she was more than pleased with the compliment.
“So, actually, I was on my way home from work, when I stopped at a restaurant to grab some food. While waiting for my food to arrive, a young woman there, came to me and started chatting randomly!”, he said. I think she was trying to flirt”, he added thoughtfully.
Noticing Sampoorna’s pointed look, Saurav chuckled nervously. “Sampoorna, don’t you trust me? Do you really think that I would approach a random woman?”, he asked.
“Oh! No! Absolutely not! Why would I think that? So, err… What happened next?”, Sampoorna asked laughing awkwardly.
Raising his eyebrows, Saurav continued, “And then, guess what? The woman’s boyfriend came up to me, thinking that I approached his girlfriend! And he was a blo*dy Hercules! Added to that, he had some of his friends with him, who were more than eager to help him, in beating me to a pulp. And then, I just bolted out! I straight away ran from there and came to you. And Sampoorna, I am so sorry that I had to come here this way, breaking in through the window”, Saurav said, smiling sheepishly.
Sampoorna grinned. “It’s okay Saurav. I’m just glad you are fine and I am happy to know that I could help you in some way”.
“By the way, I intended to come to meet you today”, Saurav said.
“For what?”
“Actually I brought flowers for you. But… in all that ruckus, only this was left with me”, he replied, holding out a single blue rose for her. It was badly crushed, though.
“It’s beautiful and I’ll keep it with me, as long as I can”, Sampoorna firmly stated, taking the flower from his hand and delicately placing it on the table.
She was touched by this simple gesture of his. And he was elated to have met someone like Sampoorna who treated a crushed flower like a treasure, just because it came from him.
“So, how are you going to go home, now?”, she asked him, after a long pause.
“Guess, I’ll have to book a cab”, he sighed, taking out his phone.
————————–
‘Stupid lazy girl! Mimi called you! The other girls called you! But you just had to sleep! I’m a stupid blo*dy idiot! Help me Dugga Maa!’, Bondita mentally berated herself, as she ran through the corridors, trying to reach the class on time.
Had she not taken a short nap after breakfast, she wouldn’t have gotten so late.
She checked the time. Relief washed through her. She still had ten minutes. She could easily reach on time.
‘Maa always woke me up effortlessly with such ease!’, she thought to herself.
I just HAD to be late. And even if I was late, why did it just HAVE to be Bose Sir’s class now? It could have been Miss Ghosh’s class. She wouldn’t say anything. But no! It just had to—
CRASH!
Bondita, along with her bag, clattered to the ground. For a moment, she sat there, too stunned to move. She could have sworn, she felt someone push her.
“Watch where you’re going”, said a spiteful voice.
“I’m sorry”, Bondita mumbled.
She got up, to find a tall, thin-faced boy. He was a senior. She remembered his name to be something like Debjit Dutta.
“Don’t let that happen again”, he warned, a certain coldness in his tone. Bondita looked up to find him looking at her up and down, in a way that creeped her out.
“You are Bondita Das, aren’t you?”, he finally asked.
She looked up defiantly and replied, “Yes. I am Bondita Das. Why?”
“Nothing Bondita. Just asking. And for your information, I am Debjit Ashish Dutta”, he said, emphasising on his middle name.
Bondita looked at him, confused, but shrugged and simply said, “Ok” and continued on her way to class.
But, even though she was getting late, she couldn’t help standing for a while and contemplate over the incident for a while.
Why was that boy behaving with her so snidely? Why was he giving her those derogatory looks? Why was he emphasising on his middle name?
As a result, she was late to class. Bondita took a deep breath and pushed open the door. Immediately, she sought out the teacher, Mr. Bose and fervently apologized to him for being late.
But true to his uncompromising; bitter nature, he ignored her apologies, and bluntly asked her, “What’s the reason that compelled you to be late to class, Miss Das?”.
“Err… Sir, actually, I fell down and got a slight ankle sprain”, she replied. It was somewhat close to the truth anyway.
“Page 249, all questions. Answers must be submitted by tomorrow”, he said, and turned away gesturing her to come in.
Bondita faked a slight limp in her steps and entered the classroom.
“But sir, that page has almost 20 questions and all are long answer type questions! And sir, I am really sorry. And it’s not any excuse, sir. I really did fall down and it’s my ankle sprain. I got it a few days ago, and now once again”, she pleaded.
“Your ankle injury doesn’t excuse you for being late to class. I do. And I do not wish to excuse you. And I am well aware of the work that I am assigning. It must be submitted within tomorrow. Take your seat”, he said and gave her a look that said, ‘don’t you dare utter another word, and argue with me, now’.
Bondita sulkily walked to her seat beside Mimi and David and sat quietly.

A Random Oneshot On AniDita
::SHE CALLED THAT LOVE::
~~~
Ten years ago, Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury was twelve years old and thought she knew everything about love. She thought she loved her Pati Babu because he was all she thought about, lying awake at night. She would think about him day and night. Her heart would beat faster and her cheeks would redden at the sight of her Pati Babu and she called that love.
Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury was twelve when she thought she lost her sansaar; her Pati Babu. She thought she lost his love; his support, the day he married chhoti patni. Her heart whined, screamed and craved for his companionship and she called that love.
Numerous times, Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury had witnessed her Rakshak Babu; her Bhagwaan, go through great pains for her; get hurt for her. She witnessed him breaking himself to build her. She experienced him fighting constantly with his inner demons, to help her emerge victorious in life, fulfilling their dreams. She felt her world crumble and heart break into a million tiny pieces when she saw him hurt and she called that love.
In a dark twist of fate, Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury was put asunder from her Bhagwaan; her sansaar, for eight years. Her heart fell to the pit of her stomach and she heard a deep roaring in her ears that almost brought her to her knees as she watched him go, away; far away from her. That moment that lasted an eternity killed her from inside and she called that love.
Away from her Sakha Babu, Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury missed him so much, that it hurt. He would float in the periphery of her mind’s vision when the smell of coffee; or fresh paper; or ink, would touch her senses. His face, adorned with that proud smile, lips mouthing ‘Shabaash Bondita’ and their dream of an empowered nation with empowered women would be on her mind, becoming her driving force, as she worked hard, all day long and even at night. She missed him but she knew his essence, his blessings, his silent support was there with her, and she called that love.
Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury was nearly twenty years old, when the smell of her distressed and manacled, and yet gloriously sacred motherland’s soil invaded her senses after eight excruciating years. The first person she wanted to lay her eyes on, was her Shikshak Babu; her Sakha Babu. She wanted to run up to him, throw her arms around him and whisper that they did it. Their dream was fulfilled and now the real work; the first steps towards empowerment were ready to be taken. Her eyes yearned to see him; her ears longed to hear his voice which was music to her ears and her heart ached to feel his presence beside her and she called that love.
Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury felt giddy at the first glimpse of Barrister Babu; her Sakha Babu after an eternity. A small yet intrinsic piece slid back seamlessly into place in her heart as her eyes adored his form, and the world suddenly seemed a better place. She felt so whole once again. Her heart swooning, she marvelled at his changed appearance and she called that love.
The beautifully fragile heart of Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury had toughened over the years, polished by all the bumpy rough patches of her difficult life. But not enough for this; not enough to behold the sight of a changed Anirudh Roy Chowdhury. It was him of course; the core essence still remained same. But what was it, that made him bear a weapon? What caused the ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi resort to violence? She would find it out, for sure. But that did not make her heart constrict any less painfully or her eyes sting with tears any less, when he so mercilessly renounced her; and yet, she called that love.
Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury was nearly twenty when love brought her, and her Sakha Babu back to life. When Sakha Babu’s beaming face broke out into tears and confessed the depth of his love for her, her heart started beating again. When he admitted his undying devotion for her, goosebumps erupted across her skin and utter exhilaration coursed through every fibre of her being. Hand in hand, as they sprinted away from hatred, into a deep abyss filled with love and bliss, she felt it was the right thing to do at the moment. In his comforting arms, she felt home and she called that love.
Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury watched, as everyone who had been entrapped in a web of hatred previously, came back onto the path of love and hailed her Sakha Babu and her, as their saviours. She felt her heart warm, as her own people, her own families swarmed around them, and showered praises and thanks. She was the happiest person on earth when it was decided that her Sakha Babu would become her Pati Babu soon, after all. His hand reached out to touch hers, and she smiled at him. It was a moment of togetherness and merriment. Now, they had all the time in the world to be together and she called that love.
Her breath hitched and her heart beat faster as she felt his warm breath on her neck and his proximity to her. The shock of warmth that travelled straight to her heart, whenever she felt his closeness, was undeniable. Together as they danced, his sparkling eyes spoke volumes and she reckoned hers did too. She hoped her actions were enough to express her devotion for him, because words were surely incapable of it. Actions would perhaps do a better job at expressing. He twirled her around, pulling her closer and she felt giddy and light-hearted all over again and she called that love.
Soon, Bondita Das really became Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury in all true senses, acquiring the identity; the name, she so much cherished. As she was carried on the wedding paalki, the pleasing reverberations of dhaak and dhol increasing her heart rate tenfold, she thought that today, she knew everything about love. Circumambulating seven times around the holy fire, uttering the most unique vows spoken ever, she felt blissful fulfilment. When she married him, she promised to never leave him, and stand beside him through thick and thin; though she need not do that, because that was already an unspoken promise made long ago. That day, her other half united with her, and she called that love.
Three years later, when Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury gave birth to twins, she was all at once terrified and overwhelmed and exhausted. Yet, with her Pati Babu by her side, she felt invincible. When she held their children in her arms for the first time, she cried tears of joy and she called that love.
Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury was the kraanti ki mashaal of Anirudh Roy Chowdhury and she proved it. They had started with baby steps and now a massive step towards women emancipation was taken. When the property rights of women were added to the latest law by the government and finally passed, after two long years of hassle, and the combined efforts of the Badlaav partners, Bondita fell to the ground, kneeling on her knees, her Pati Babu right beside her. They shed relentless tears of utter contentment and joy, clutching onto each other as though their life depended on it, and she called that love.
Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury had heard all her life, that in the final moments of a person’s life, all they see, is snippets of their own entire life, flashing in the mind’s eye. But all she wanted to see, and all she saw, was her Pati Babu, her sansaar, her Bhagwaan, her everything. Seventy three years later, she was ninety three years old, and on her deathbed. Her hand was where it belonged: enclosed in her Pati Babu’s hand. They looked at each other, their eyes locking, knowing death was near. The sun crept slowly through the window, its light a pale orange and while dawn broke outside, this was dusk; this was the end. Not the end of their love for each other; that was endless and timeless. But the end of this lifetime.
Many many years ago, Bondita Anirudh Roy Chowdhury had known nothing about love. Today, her life was all about love.
Many many years later, in a moment of perfect tranquility, she felt that each breath she took, each beat of her heart, came from the man lying beside her, also in the final moments of his life, just like her. The changes they had brought about in the society; the trials and tribulations they had gone through; the fire of revolution and change they had awakened within countless others, were all done together. She thought there was no better way to express their love for each other than to emerge victorious in fulfilling their dreams.
With each breath they took, their hearts sank a little more. Who knew when they would meet again? Who knew, how long it would be, before they could love each other once again?
But that did not matter. Because Bondita knew, that in their final moments, all they wanted, was to be beside each other; cherish each other a little more, for as long as they could, and she called that love.
Their hands entwined together, they took a deep breath, their eyes slowly drooping closed. That breath, was the last breath they ever took. Sobs echoed across the entire room, as their families and children lamented and wept for the loss of two of their dearest souls that exuded love, and only love.
They fulfilled the promise to stay together forever, and I call this love.
This got too big😅.
