ADHOORE HUM ADHOORE TUM

Chapter-3 (Kaanchi’s first meet)

**************

Kabir once again went down the memory lane one year before when this saga of love-hate that we witnessed just now began. It was raining heavily. Kabir’s car had just broken down on the highway. He had parked his car to one side of the road and was trying to call his eccentric secretary PG to send him another car to the same location. But there was no signal on his phone. He could not even take a lift because the highway looked completely desolate at that time of the night.

Just then, he noticed a car drawing to a halt before his eyes. He and his car were not immediately visible to the person in the car before him but he could clearly see both the car and its occupant. It was a woman wearing a pure white kurti, with a blue embroidered pattern of flowers around the neck, and blue colour leggings. She was neither informally dressed nor formally. He would call it a perfect balance between the two. Her style of dressing was a direct contrast to his own style of dressing. He always preferred wearing dark and furtive colours like black, blue or brown.

She must have been about twenty-five or twenty-six years old. Long, deep and expressive hazel eyes which looked furtively around as though afraid of attention, a sharp and pointed Greek nose, and clearly etched features! Her skin tone was a pale babyish pink in colour and her face had a very inscrutable expression. It was neither a smile nor a frown. Her whole body language was one of concealment as though she didn’t want to let the other person through her defences. Her hands were folded and her legs were crossed.

She was not an immature girl but a fully grown and mature woman with an admixture of innocence. The serious expression he saw one moment on her face got transformed into wonder and happiness in the very next. It was as if the rain and solitude had set her completely free and washed away all her inhibitions. She got down from the car and was dancing in the rain in complete abandonment.

Her natural beauty was even more accentuated by her wet clothes and her picture perfect figure. From that distance, he deduced that she must have been about 5 feet 6inches tall. If both of them stood beside each other, she would perhaps have reached to the level of his eyes as he himself was six-feet tall. She could easily have been a heroine of any of his shows. Moreover there was no show or pomp about her. She was hardly wearing any make up. She was not a made-up glam doll who had to depend on a beautician or make-up man for her beauty.

She seemed to be completely unaware of the fact that he was watching her. She would perhaps not have danced like a child in the rain if she knew that he was watching her. His conscience pricked him for a moment that he was intruding upon somebody’s moment of private joy. He wanted to look away from her but was unable to take his eyes off her. There was something magical in the whole experience. If somebody just stepped up to him and whispered in his ear that she was a beautiful witch who cast a spell on unsuspecting passers-by, he would have readily believed them.

He continued looking at her without taking his eyes off her. He saw that she had suddenly stopped in her tracks. She became aware of his presence and the fact that he had been unwittingly observing her. She quickly got into her car and was about to leave. Only then did it strike Kabir that he was stranded there on this lonely highway. He ran to her car and requested her to give him a lift as his car had broken down. She silently nodded her head in acquiescence. He got into the car and she started driving. An uneasy silence prevailed between them. To ease the uncomfortable situation, he began some light, small talk, “I’m Kabir…” to which she interrupted saying, “Kabir Goenka, the famous television star. I know! Who doesn’t know you actually?”

He apologized for unwittingly observing her, “I didn’t mean to look. It just happened before my eyes that I couldn’t look away.” She did not give any reply to this remark, except blushing a deep red. She tried talking something entirely different, “I usually make hot kheer in such weather.” He replied, “That sounds like a cool idea. I usually have a hot cup of tea along with pakoda’s in such weather. My phone’s signal is back. Just tell me where exactly we are now so that I can ask my driver to come and pick me up.”

She said, “My house is very near to this place. You can wait over there until your driver comes. I’ll give you the directions and you can instruct your driver to come there.” He thanked her, “That’s so sweet of you but I’ve already troubled you a lot so I do not want to cause you any more inconvenience.”

She softly convinced him telling, “It’s not a good idea remaining for so long in such wet clothes. Your clothes are also as wet as mine. You may fall ill. Don’t think that you are causing me any inconvenience.” He wanted to refuse this invitation but somehow after five minutes he found himself at her house. She gave him a towel to wipe himself dry and a new pair of clothes saying, “I bought them for my younger brother but I think that they will fit you.”

After Kabir changed into those clothes, she handed him a hot cup of tea and pakoda’s. She had also prepared in this short time some kheer. She said, “Here are your favourite items and mine too. Today I’ll try your idea while you can try mine. Your driver will not be able to make it any time soon. I just heard the news. There has been a landslide and it will take until morning to clear the road. We have all the time in the world before us.”

Kabir heaved a sigh and settled himself down to enjoy all those items she had made. It was very thoughtful of her because he had had a long and tiring shooting schedule and he was practically starving by this time. He asked her, “You live here all alone?” to which she replied, “Yes. My family lives at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. Nobody is going to get outraged with me for bringing a male friend at this time of the night. Moreover, even if my parents were here they would understand. They believe and trust me. They know that I would not do anything wrong intentionally. So you are safe in that way.”

It was the first time after years that Kabir was sitting like this and talking to a woman. The ease and comfort he felt was the same which he felt when he was with his mother. For a person whom he was meeting the first time, he seemed to feel no inhibitions whatsoever. It was as if both of them knew each other for years while they had met just an hour or two before. He suddenly asked her, “I’ve spent so much time at your house and yet do not even know your name? How silly of me!”

She replied, “I’m Sanchi Reddy. I’m also in the television industry. I work for Veer Singhania who is also a good friend of mine. I’m his story writer and also creative director.” Kabir was greatly astonished, “So you are that great find of Veer. I’ve seen your shows on television. They are awesome I must say. Nobody would have guessed that it would have been such a turnaround for young Singhania after his disastrous debut. How is it that we never see you at any of the award functions? Veer always receives your awards on your behalf. You’re never seen at any of the success parties of your show and there are practically no photos of you in any magazine or the internet. Any special reason for this?”

Sanchi said, “I prefer to let my work talk for itself. I hate all this pomp and show. I love being in the side-lines. That’s why I’m never seen at either award functions or success parties. Except my unit nobody knows me. People are never bothered about story writers or creative directors as they are by the hero or heroine of the show who always hog the limelight.”

Kabir said, “I would surely love to work with you and Veer if any interesting concept comes up. All your shows are fresh and very appealing in their approach. I too don’t love these parties and functions but there are some things you have to do to retain your standing in the industry. There were many times when I wondered at award functions as to who this Sanchi Reddy was. At last I’ve met you. Can I have your autograph please?”

Sanchi blushed saying, “Come on Kabir, I’ve not done anything extraordinary. And you are such a big superstar and you are asking the autograph of a common story writer?” To this, he replied, “Both of us know that you are no common story writer. It’s the tragedy of our industry that we don’t give recognition where it is due. It’s actually the story which makes the hero or heroine. It was a real pleasure meeting you.”

Both of them spent the entire night talking like this. How fast the time passed both of them didn’t know. Kabir’s car had come at last and it was time for him to go. He wished her goodbye but kept looking back at her. He did not want to leave. His heart felt again like an errant school boy who had committed some unknown mischief without the permission of the teacher or headmaster. His heart skipped a beat every time he looked at her. He thought that his past had made him completely incapable to experience such feelings again.

But here he was again in the process of getting infatuated with a woman. The more he tried to stop himself, the more he was thinking about her. It was really strange that he, who had been immune to all the charms of countless beautiful heroines and crazy fans, was getting involved with a story writer and creative director. But there was something very piquant about her. Both their tastes and interests matched a lot. Kabir kept telling himself, “This is the last time you are going to see her. So it is all right. You will forget her soon.”

Sanchi told herself after Kabir had left, “So that’s Mr. Kabir Goenka or the great KG. He is nothing like these papers and magazines portray him to be. Let’s see what the future has in store for us. So this was our first meeting. Interesting! Hope it’s not the last meeting! Both of us are in the same industry. Let’s see if we get an opportunity of working together.”

While sipping her cup of morning coffee, a story began forming in her mind. After ten minutes, she sat down at her desk and started writing a new story. She started fleshing out the basic plot, concept and characters. She spent the rest of that month working on the script. She wrote in big bold letters at the top of her script ‘ADHOORE HUM, ADHOORE TUM’. After she seemed satisfied with her initial work, she called up Veer and told him, “Hi, Veer. I’m written something new. Can you meet me? I would like to have your opinion about this story and concept.” Sanchi continued reading the story she had written.

  • ADHOORE HUM, ADHOORE TUM

Girl meets boy! They fell in love with each other! Or they fought with each other! Or they became friends!’ Banal and stale as these lines sound, it is so true of every new acquaintance we make in life or of every novel or story we read. Varsh met Spandana on a lonely road one rainy night. He was handsome and dashing while she was beautiful and charming. A six foot tall Casanova and a five feet six inches tall Cinderella. The attraction between them was palpable, their ease in unease, their curiosity to know each other better; aren’t all these the ingredients of every love story? Let me quote the words of Sarah Dessen in The Truth About Forever, ‘There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment.’ Something had been set in motion that rainy day. Let’s see where the future will take them. Will it be friendship, enmity, love or something else only time can inform us! …
