Hi @diehardbeyhadhfan, nice to see you back and @Sonia…I understand what you’re trying to say and I’ll just try to explain my take on that.

First of all from what I’ve read psychopathy is a loose term. I mean we also use the word psychopathic to refer to people suffering from an undiagnosed mental disorder. Although no psychiatric or psychological organization has sanctioned a diagnosis titled “psychopathy”, assessments of psychopathic characteristics are widely used in criminal justice settings in some nations, and may have important consequences for individuals. But let’s just leave all that and come to your point.

Yes I’ve read about those types of individuals who just want to own their life partners and are incapable of love. They’ll just want to possess another person. But that’s not resulted from love or from emotions like that, it’s simply like a slave-owner relation between them. They see their partners as an object for their possession rather than as an individual. Maybe they know they’re not normal. But they won’t admit it and what’s worst is that they don’t even want to change and get better. They just want to get that person all to themselves and will find sadistic pleasure from torturing them mentally as well as physically. And if the situation arises they’ll just act as taking medications to fool everyone and to get them all to them again.

But the major difference I see is that although Maya may have exhibited some of the above mentioned symptoms she’s also so very different.
While she had refused to take medications the reason for doing so was different. She didn’t do it because she didn’t wanted to change. She so wanted to get better. I’ve read that in PTSD etc, the victims try to stay away from incidents and things that remind them of the tragedy. That was what Maya did. She admits that she didn’t take it because she was having hallucinations.

I’d have hated Maya to the core in spite of her abused childhood and all if it were for certain other circumstances. I’ll just say about those situations which would’ve made sure that Maya is a heartless person incapable of change.

If Maya tortured her mother mentally and physically in retaliation to the fact that she was not there for her when she needed her mother the most.

After developing an “obsession” with arjun if she tried to separate him from his loved ones using evil plans just for isolating him and making him helpless and at her mercy.
After trapping arjun in a golden cage if she tried to mentally exhaust him by playing with his feelings and preying on his fears.
She could’ve done it by constantly reminding him that he married her just for money and accusing him of having affair with saanjh and other women in office and such. Still denied him of the amenities and other resources and making him stay only at house while she continued to be the boss of her company. Not allowing him to speak with anyone other than her and thus practically house arresting him in effect.

And after witnessing the scene of late-night drinking and love confession of arjun to saanjh and their almost-kiss if Maya planned to kill or harm saanjh. Like at pooja when she saw her dupatta catching fire if she let it burn and made no moves to save her.I’d have hated Maya and realise she’s a lost cause if that scene was something like this. Like Maya herself surreptitiously set her in fire to harm her.

When she found out saanjh’s return to India, without even thinking she might’ve moved on and forgot arjun, if Maya planned to kill her to get rid of her once and for all out of the fear that she returned for arjun.

When ayaan came to her house if she deliberately tried to provoke him when he just wanted to open that door, like tearing her clothes by her own or something.

If Maya sought out Samay and asked him to pretend to love saanjh and propose to marry in order to make her stay away from arjun as well as for torturing her because yes, she hated saanjh for constantly trying to turn arjun against her and for always insisting she’s mad. She could’ve made use of her influence in Samay to torture saanjh, like by asking to create misunderstandings in her family, Prem is already disapproving of saanjh and arjun’s relationship and made full use of this situation. Or better yet asking him to kill or fatally injure her without anyone suspecting.

Or if Maya never told Samay she hates him and thus two-time him and arjun. If she always said she loved Samay and will do anything for him and that she hated arjun truly and was with him only for torturing him but her true love will always be Samay.

Maya tried to make full use of Samay’s love towards her. That much is true. Always asking him to prove his love by doing things that she wanted. But never once did she gave any sign or hint that she reciprocated his feelings (until these recent episodes of course). In fact she never forgot to remind him of her hatred and disgust towards him by saying she consider him as trash and nothing else. But Samay being Samay never got off her back and continued to try to gain her love at any cost. And didn’t even hesitate to threaten her when he thought every plan failed.

When Maya returned from the asylum ayaan again provoked her by calling her names and again accusing her as mad. Ayaan was released from jail. Now we know that, it was not possible without Maya withdrawing the case. For ayaan’s release Maya’s cooperation was much needed and she did just that, because she wanted to start afresh; a new life for her child and her family. And thus decided to give ayaan a second chance although he did molest her and insulted her in the most infuriating manner with his words even if he didn’t rape her. That was still equal to rape more or less.

If Maya impulsively decided to kill him because she thought ayaan will never change and without even trying to know his current stand regarding his sister-in-law, she tried to harm him. If she cornered him and cruelly reminded him of what she’s capable of and tried to kill him by torturing him in the worst possible manner.

The possibilities are limitless for creating circumstances ensuring hatred towards Maya, and making her the cruelest character in history. Then no-one would be loving her or supporting her despite her bad childhood. Not feeling empathy, love or any other emotions to her fellow human beings and incapable of caring about their safety or well-being. Not showing remorse and accepting her mistakes even to herself. But as it is Maya is nothing like that. It’s true that she’s manipulative and try to change the situation according to her benefit. But that never crossed the limit to being downright cruel.
When she knew she has done something bad but felt like that’s the only solution to make that situation right, she’ll definitely regret it. She’ll be shown crying bitterly in that guilt. She’s not doing that to gain sympathy from anyone or else she would’ve put up this show in front of them, waiting for their arrival and starting her performance in the pretext of unaware of their presence.

And she knew something was wrong with her. But it’s true that she was reluctant in admitting that to arjun. Just think about that, even from a tender age she’s hearing that she’s mental from none other than her own father. Ashwin tried to instill the belief that she deserved no happiness because she was mental. Ashwin hated Maya since she’s the sole beneficiary of all the assets of jaanvi and he couldn’t even kill her because that’ll cause the properties to transfer to charity. So he hated her more for merely existing and constantly tried to prove she’s mental since he could gain the control of the company at the event of Maya not having sound mental health.

And it’s no surprise that she developed some sort of mental problems after going through a tragic and loveless childhood. So it was not easy for her to admit her problems to even her love because she grew up hearing that being mentally ill is a crime or something; what mental patients need was punishment not treatment. At least that’s what’s the impression her dad gave her.

But that didn’t mean she didn’t want to change. She had her fears as to how arjun will react to this piece of information, that he may leave her after knowing this. But at the same time she desperately wanted to get better. She actually waited for someone to understand her and help her. But the truth is no-one ever tried to do that. Not even attempted to notice or think as to why she was acting this way or tried to understand why she turned out this way.

Remember that video proof saanjh so “cleverly” managed to procure from Maya’s house. If she wanted, Maya could’ve easily destroyed that and she absolutely had no reason or need to hide it at a place that anyone could easily spot. But she did just that. And she herself reveals her reason to do so to jaanvi; that she actually wanted someone to find it and get her help. This also means she never wanted ayaan to suffer in jail for indefinite time; she left the option open for his release. If she was indeed evil and wanted ayaan to suffer she’ll never do this.

I’d have pitied arjun if even after trying to cure his wife with love and by providing her treatment Maya denied all those attempts and refused to change and refused arjun’s help. But the truth is arjun never even tried to understand her or tried to help her even though he claims to love her unconditionally. It’s hard to believe that after living with Maya for 3 years arjun was clueless about Maya’s mental state. He knew about Maya’s self harming tendencies and suicide attempts as a reaction to or as a means to cope with extreme stress. But he did nothing about that. And Maya was not doing this to gain sympathy from arjun either. Because she was the same before arjun came to her life too. Remember there were lot of scenes that shows her harming and injuring herself in s1. But arjun ignored all these and chose to act to Maya’s whim and managed to be successful in suffocating him and pushing Maya further into the illness. He didn’t ever think about the option of medical treatment. He’s like, ‘Oh! No, my wife’s mental without a doubt, so she’s suffocating me in her golden cage and I so want to escape; but what to do, if I so much as think about leaving her she’ll try to injure herself and even attempt suicide. So I, just like a good husband will just stay here pretending to still love her and act according to her wishes because you know, I’m dumb as a rock and couldn’t even think about providing medical help.’

Even when he finds out about Maya’s pregnancy arjun didn’t so much as think about treating her despite being in a hospital at the time. He even thought about the extreme measure of aborting the child but failed to think that there’s a branch in modern medicine called psychiatry and that mental illness can be cured. Seriously how dumb can you get arjun? Even stupidity have a limit. And only after witnessing Maya breaking down in front of him and asking him to help her did he think about that possibility.

When saanjh became depressed after her father’s death arjun was more than happy to cheer her up and try to bring her back to normal life. But what did it tell about him not understanding Maya’s condition and her mental scars after having clear knowledge about what she had gone through in her childhood. Maya may have asked arjun to not visit her in the asylum, but he didn’t have to just do that without any question. She is his wife and mother if his unborn child. If he really cared he could’ve visited her or even tried to do so, even if Maya asked him not. Actually if he really cared he wouldn’t have agreed in admitting Maya in the asylum. She was pregnant for crying out loud and that atmosphere is not good for the unborn baby too. He could’ve stayed with her and ensured her becoming cured by being with her just like he have done with saanjh. Then if Maya tried to skip her medicines he would’ve known about that sooner or later.

And after marriage Maya genuinely wanted to change. The proud and arrogant boss of fashion and the city was reduced to a typical helpless bahu who obeyed her MIL and tried to maintain her family’s peace and happiness by bearing all the pain silently, not picking up a fight with MIL and not poisoning arjun’s mind against his mother. But when vandana opened her mouth for only accusing Maya as mad and advised arjun to leave his wife, Maya had enough. She became afraid vandana will eventually become successful in separating them. So instead she separated vandana and arjun. Now those incurable psychopaths that you referred to, they’ll also do the same but their motive will be different. They’ll do so for isolating their partner from his loved ones for having them all to themselves. They’ll never try to mingle with the family or try to change. That’s the main difference I see in Maya.

And when Maya noticed the unnatural friendship of arjun and saanjh which even made them to meet late-night with no qualms even though one of them became married, she didn’t do anything at first. She opted to give them a second chance (even if no-one gave her that chance) to prove that her doubts were misplaced and arjun’s first priority is still Maya.
But at the pooja, when she finds that arjun’s full concentration was on saanjh although it was she who’ve got burned in the process of rescuing saanjh, Maya got convinced that saanjh will ultimately be the reason for her separation from her husband. So she plotted to separate them before that happened.
But if Maya was anything like those patients, she wouldn’t have rescued saanjh from fire in the first place. In fact she would be the one to set that fire.

And she killed vandana. Because she really believed vandana was responsible for the stillbirth and she did it on purpose when in reality that was an accident with no-one to blame. Both vandana and Maya were extremely agitated and failed to pay attention to their position resulting in Maya losing balance and falling down the stairs when her concentration suddenly broke. And she killed vandana for avenging her child. But in Maya’s eyes that was not a crime and vandana deserved death. That’s why she never repented that murder.

And about trying to kill jaanvi. Actually what the hell did jaanvi do for her daughter. From childhood itself, she was the only one who could’ve saved Maya. She knew about the cruelties of her husband, still opted to do nothing about it. Sure, she might’ve confronted him but as you can see it was never good enough. However scared we are, when it comes to the safety of our loved ones we’ll forget about all the fear and be ready to face anything however dangerous that’d be. That’s what Maya did for arjun. She was extremely scared of her father that she’ll get a panic attack whenever he came near her and couldn’t even raise her voice for calling for help because of his mere presence. But when arjun’s safety was at stake she forgot all her fear and weakness. When ashwin tried to kill arjun she finally took her revenge and killed him. I’m not saying jaanvi should’ve killed ashwin when he tortured Maya, but she could’ve took a firm stand but she didn’t. At least she was not scared of ashwin like Maya was right? So if she wanted she could’ve saved her child from a tragic childhood.

But when she grew up Maya never held this against her Mom or ill treated her. Yes it’s true that she never allowed jaanvi to go outside on her own or do something on her own. But that was not for punishing her but was for her safety. She knew ashwin will do anything to hurt her and since her mother was all she had he will definitely try to harm her. And that was so proved multiple times when ashwin tried to kill jaanvi.

But Maya couldn’t forget that her mother was never there to protect her from her father. But what’s even more tragic is that even after all these years jaanvi still believed ashwin’s lies over her daughter. She didn’t had any qualms about talking in his favour to Maya. Just imagine how Maya would’ve felt knowing about her mother still trusting her abuser despite knowing about the pain he inflicted on her even from her childhood. These all left a deep impression on her already scarred mind. And while trying to kill her mother I think she tried to suppress her conscience by thinking about it as a revenge for the injustice done to her from her childhood. But it’s also true that she loved her mother. The time when she jumps into the water for saving jaanvi without even thinking about her own inability to swim proves that much.
But if she indeed was evil Maya would’ve tried to kill jaanvi in the most cruel manner making sure she suffers a lot before her death. And when she survived that, she would’ve again ensured her misery since jaanvi couldn’t even speak.

Again let me assure you, I’m not insisting Maya is an angel and didn’t do any mistakes in her life. She’s not entirely innocent just like she’s not completely evil. Not everything is black and white. And Maya is grey.
And there was a great chance that she could’ve got cured completely and lead a happy life with arjun and their family. But even after knowing her character and her problems no-one tried to give her a chance and didn’t even thought about the possibility of Maya changing for the better. Every other character in this show is acting like mental illness is a punishable offense and not a condition that has a possibility to get cured. Only after finding out about her actual disease, we can say if Maya is curable or not. But all are always jumping into conclusions that it’s incurable and the only solution is arjun leaving Maya. If they didn’t even tried to understand her or tried to cure her, then what right do they have in judging her? If arjun tried that and Maya stubbornly resisted his attempts to provide treatment, then we would have sympathized with him and say that Maya never wanted to change. As it is in reality, Maya desperately wanted to get cured and arjun didn’t do anything about that.

There are patients who try to take advantage and refuse to change when their partners try to cure them by loving them. But here arjun never even tried this. He was all about giving her ultimatums like if she ever make any mistake he’ll leave her just like that. Maya already is insecure and scared that arjun will leave her at any moment. So his threatening only did help in increasing her fears. Instead he could’ve said, he’ll be there with her in all the hardships and she could trust him with any secrets. Even if she felt like straying into the wrong path she could always come to him and they’ll together deal with whatever bothers her. And together they’ll find a solution. Then Maya would’ve trusted him and without fearing or doubting approached him. But what happened is arjun became successful in scaring Maya and as she became more afraid of losing him, she ultimately chose the wrong path.

Even though I’ve no personal experience with psychopaths or the patients of other incurable medical illness, I’ve read plenty about them before; both fiction and real-life incidents. But I couldn’t relate Maya with them in any context. She’s nothing like them.

That’s why I still love and support Maya. Because throughout the show her struggles to become good was shown while no-one was helping her in that and was even trying to stop her from doing that.

But this is purely my pov and there’s a good chance that I maybe wrong.
The problem here is, this is a fiction and they haven’t even revealed what’s her actual disease is. Though there are a lot of mental diseases, most of them have several common symptoms and without a thorough consultation we can’t reach an accurate diagnosis. And for the aforementioned reasons I believe Maya is not a patient of that kind. And like I previously said to @Raji I’ll never ever expect the loved ones of those patients to silently endure the torture and destroy their life. Death is the better option than choosing to live with a partner who’s incapable of love and who finds pleasure in making your like hell. But again I strongly believe Maya is not of that sort. Still I can’t claim that I’m right since this is a fictional show and they can change the story according to their wish. But I believe Maya is capable of change but who never got that chance and ended up destroying her own life as well as others’.You can agree or disagree. But try to respect my opinion just like I do yours.
Sorry for this lengthy lecture. But I believe I’ve made myself clear.
