“Mattttyyyyy!!!” I shouted at the top of my lungs. Finally. I have reached my home. Here, I am, in the doorstep of my home, with my eyes closed. “Gini!! Why are u shouting like this?” Mom’s voice reached my ears. I stood there with my eyes closed. “Where is matty?” I asked her with my closed. “Gini” Hearing this calm, soothing voice, I opened my eyes immediately. There he was. Matty. I wrapped my arms around him in the excitement of meeting him after a year. “Gini ! How are u?” he asked me as he caressed my hair. “Absolutely fine, Matty!” I replied. “I have told u many times Mathews, don’t let her call like that. why are u letting her call u matty?” Mom complained. “Sherley, she can call whatever she likes. I don’t mind.” He told her. “But you are her..” mom was interrupted by him.

“I know I am her dad” he said with a smile as he looked at me. I smiled back. Yes. Matty@ Dr. Mathews is my dad. He is a doctor and is respected a lot by the people here. I wanted to become a doctor like him. He is my inspiration, motivation, best friend, big brother, my first mom and a great DAD. I hopped inside happily, leaving my bags at the doorstep. “This girl! She should have been a boy! God!” I heard mom grumbling as she lifted my bags and headed inside. “She hasn’t changed. She always wants to see u first!” mom complained to matty. “Don’t be jealous, Mrs. Sherley Mathews!” I and matty chorused together. She glared at us. We laughed. “What’s for lunch today?” I asked her as I opened the lids of the vessels which were laid on the table. “Biryani?” I asked in joy as I saw it. “Wah! What an aroma! You are the best, Sherley mathews!” I chirped. “Enough! Stop buttering me!” she told me. I gave a sheepish smile to her. “Wash your hands and then eat” she told me as I was about to plunge in. “Mom! I am hungry!” I told her. “Wash. Then eat” She said as she snatched the bowl from me. “Not fair!” I told her. “Everything is fair, lazy monkey!” she told me. I giggled hearing that. I missed both of them a lot. I am their only daughter and hence I am pampered a lot by both of them. After a sumptuous lunch, I headed to my room to change. As I entered, the cool breeze from the windows welcomed me. It feels so good to be here. I wore a jeans and a checked shirt and headed downstairs. “Mom! I am going to meet anu. See u soon!” I told her. “Be back soon. Today is Jessie’s engagement. U remember? So don’t be late” she told me. I nodded as I left. Jessie is my cousin. She is getting married to an NRI in January. Today is her engagement. I walked along the lane to the bus stop to catch the bus to meet anu at her home. I, Sasha and Anu have been the 3 idiots, always hanging out together. I and Sasha study in chennai now and Anu is studying here. We both miss her a lot. So, we always make it a point to spend our Christmas vacation with her. While Sasha is a big flirt and manages to get 2 or 3 boyfriends at a time, Anu is a big foodie and manages to gobble 2 or 3 pizza’s at a time. Though, we 3 are different, we share a very good, beautiful friendship. To describe me in short, I am a tomboy. Well, that’s what the society calls me. All thanks to my boyish attire and look. I always wear shorts and jeans and had my hair short till I was in tenth. Mom made me grow long hair . I hate that. But she won finally and now I have a not so long or not so short hair. The whole town thinks that I should have been a boy. Even I do think. I have never shown interest towards love.

It is not like I despise that. It is that I don’t or I can’t understand it. “Hey Gini!” I heard a voice behind me. I turned. There he was, smiling at me. Rahul. The most sought after boy in this town. We studied together in the same school here till tenth before I moved to chennai. He is called “Mr. Handsome” by the girls here. Whatever. I don’t know what’s there in him that everyone is impressed by him. He is my friend. To be frank, his father is also a doctor like Matty and they both were best friends. So I was forced to make friendship with him. Well, he is a nice boy. I mean, he behaves like a typical gentleman. But he failed to impress me as he does with all girls. “Hi rahul” I waved at him, plastering a smile on my face. “How are u? It has been a long time since we met.” he told me. “Yeah” I told him.

“Actually Gini, I want to tell u something” he told me. I could sense nervousness in his voice. What the hell?? My mind was engulfed in a sea of negative thoughts. But, my brain told me that how could a much sought after boy like Rahul can fall for a mere tomboy. Right. “Tell me” I told him. As he was about to take my hand and place it upon his, I gave a dangerous look to him that he took his hand back. “Gini, I love u” he said it in a go. As he uttered these, my anger knew no bounds. More than anger, shock. How could this happen? I can’t believe my ears. I looked at him straight into his eyes. He lowered his gaze. I sensed that he was blushing. Duh! “Gini, u can take your own time. I am not forcing u to tell u today. U can tell me next week” he told hastily and ran away before I could reply.

“What!!??” Anu and Sasha shrieked. “U mean the same rahul, Mr. Handsome!” Sasha opened her mouth in shock. “There is only one rahul” I told them bluntly. “No, even the milkman’s name is rahul” Anu said as she munched the last sandwich. I glared at her. “Wasn’t his name Raman?” sasha asked anu. “Yeah, but he wanted his name to be modern. That’s the reason” she said. “So, I thought that whether the milkman rahul had proposed our gini” she added and they both burst into laughter. I immediately snatched the samosa from Anu’s plate. “Gini! Give it back!!” she shouted. “U were enjoying laughing, now laugh!” I told her. Sasha’s phone rang. I grabbed it from the table and saw the screen. It was her new boyfriend. What’s his name? Ha, Shravan.

I picked the phone without paying heed to her screams and yells and turned on the speaker. “Hello? Who’s this?” I managed to speak that in a male voice. Anu giggled silently. “Is this sasha??” he asked nervously. “Sasha! How do u know my wife?” I asked him in a rude voice. Sasha covered her mouth with her hands. Anu was trying hard not to laugh loudly. I heard him gasping in shock. I bit my lips to prevent laughing. “Wife??”he yelled loudly. “But is she young?? How could u marry her? This is illegal.” he shouted. “Who the hell are u to interferre in my life?” I continued talking in a male’s voice. “Her boy…” he was about to tell before he realised and ended the call. I threw her phone on the bed as that coward ended the call in fear. “You and your so called love! Stingy crap!” I told her. Anu was clutching her stomach and laughing hard. “Gini Mathews, Don’t be over confident. One day you yourself will fall a prey to this stingy crap.” Sasha told me. “Never ever!” I told her determinedly. That would never happen. I am damn sure. But, little did I know that Sasha’s words would become true.

“What are u going to say him?” Sasha’s question echoed in my mind again and again. I am waiting at the bus stop waiting for the bus. I always wanted to own a bike of mine. If I had one, there’s no need of going by bus everytime. But Matty told me that he would get me one after I finish schooling. “Love marriages are bliss. You know why? Because u choose your own partner and can be happy for lifetime. In arranged marriages, u have to learn to love a stranger who u are forced to marry. May be, the guy I chose is wrong. But not love.” These words of Sasha are confusing me. Does that mean that I should say yes to Rahul? Jesus! Do help me! The situation is making me mad. Initially, I was clear that I would refuse his proposal. But Sasha’s words are making me confused. Because, I am a girl who cares about my happiness. I am not that typical Indian selfless girl as they show in films and soaps. I can do anything for my happiness. My phone flashed. It was mom. “Where are u?? Come soon! It’s getting late” She told. “I am on the way mom” I replied.

“Hey green salwar! you are beautiful!” I looked at the direction from where the noise came. I saw a gang of boys who were flirting with Swati sis , who was waiting for the bus. She is like my elder sister and is very sweet. She gave a disgusting look to them. But they continued troubling her.”Mom, I will call u back” I ended the call. This scene made me furious. Before I could do something, I heard a loud noise of a speeding bike which came to a halt. “Oh no! He is here!!” The gang of boys yelled in shock. I turned to see who it was.
