Ch.4 – A Reunion
“Gear up boys! This year’s championship needs to be ours. Out on the track now, 5 laps in 20 minutes!!” Mr.Jethley blew the whistle and rushed the athletes out.
“Coach!” Sumedh called from the side. He ran up and grabbed him in a hug. ” I missed you.”
“I didn’t.” Jethley Sir pulled away from the hug. “I thought you died.” Sumedh was taken back by his blunt words. “One random day I wake up to find my son missing. No note no contact. For a whole year I don’t see him. I can’t fill a missing report. Why? Because my son’s mom says he’s an adult and he knows how to handle himself. A freaking 10 word explanation for the 18 years of memories I made with you.”
“I am sorry.” Sumedh said full of guilt, wiping away tears.
“A sorry isn’t enough for the whole year of worries I went through thinking you would never come back.”
“I missed you. I really needed your guidance. The 1 year I spent without your support, trust me I have understood life. But still I couldn’t manage to live without you. We learned the importance of family.”
“Don’t leave again. Not without telling me.”
“I am sorry.”
Scene Shift: Classroom
“Mr.Chopra?” Anya knocked on the door but there was no reply. She peeped in and saw a little light in the far back. She walked towards it. “Mr.Chopra? Anya you were late again!” She talked to herself.
Siddharth saw the girl entering class 3C and in a blink he stood in the room’s doorway. He heard someone talking.
“Aliya.” Anya froze in her place. She could hear someone coming closer. Without moving she took a pencil in hand, ready to attack. Fear was evident on her face. She could see the person’s shadow extending his hand to her. She moved away before he could touch her, and with full swing of her hand, attacked him. She missed her target as he bent back.
Sid looked at the girl, fear and determination blended together. Her black orb-like eyes twinkled in the sunlight. Hair played on her baby soft skin owing to the full circle she made in order to hit him. She reminded him of someone.
Anya and Siddharth composed themselves.
“Who were you talking to?” Sid’s voice was filled with frustration and anger. His patience was being tested and her confused expressions weren’t helping. “Who was here with you?” He asked loudly.
“No one!” She immediately said afraid of his tone.
“Aliya was here wasn’t she?” He asked holding her by the elbow.
“No one was here. I don’t know any Aliya!” She winced.
“Then why were you talking to Sumedh? As much as I know, he was not in contact with anyone. Then how does he know you?” He tightened his grip, hurting her. Anya was still holding the pencil and she made sure she wouldn’t miss her target this time.
Sid took off his hand from her elbow to protect his neck as the girl attempted to poke him again. When he looked up she was gone, running out the door. “Hey wait!”
Scene Shift: Corridors
Anya walked in a fast pace, looking back once in a while to see if anyone followed. She stared at her phone to see the 8 missed calls from her mother before rushing out the college. Her mom was waiting right outside.
Siddharth saw the girl leaving in an auto, blending in with the traffic.
“Shit!” He banged his hands on the pillar, walking away fully raged. The art students were preparing a banner but just then Sid walked all over it, creating his shoe prints on the wet, recently painted plastic.
“Watch it! Are you blind!” A few of them screamed.
“Tumhare baap ki property nahi hain.” A guy said.
Sid’s day wasn’t getting any better and a fight wouldn’t have helped. Just before he could break any bones Faisal intervened. “Sid calm down.”
“Take him away. Khud toh kuch karne nahi wale, wasting our time too. F**king rich brats.” That’s it. Siddharth lunged at him.
Kabir who was about to leave college saw the brawl. He went near and tried to take Sid of off the boy. More Elite Crew members joined in the fight, hitting those who tried to stop Siddharth.
“Boys! Cut it out!!” Jethley sir said over the noise. He forcefully pulled Siddharth away, pushing him to one side and the art student to another. Sumedh watched the whole situation intently, away from everyone’s eyes.
Sid was not willing to end it but Faisal held his shoulder shaking his head in a no.
“Handle him.” Jethley Sir said to Faisal. Then he turned to Kabir, “This isn’t the place to show your skills. Get in the ring if you want to fight.” Kabir wanted to say something but the coach didn’t allow him. “Next time you all will be in the principal’s office.”
He waited for the boys to disperse before going back to Sumedh who stood at the gate. “Any plans?”
“Nothing really.”
“You got time for your coach?”
“You bet.”
“Let’s go then. I want to show you something special.” Jethley Sir guided him to his car in front of the college. Fiza who was sitting on the opposite side of the street fooling around with her friends managed to catch a glimpse of them. She stood up trying to see it better.
“Ishu you have your bike right?” She asked one of her friends still looking at Coach and Sumedh.
“Yeah why?”
