Ch.8:
Is she crying? Her and emotional? Impossible. She never cries. She never even frowns. She’s a bully, she can’t be hurt. What the hell is happening?!?? Riya wondered in awe as she watched Fiza brood over Sumedh’s words. She thought she had seen a tear forming in her eyes, but maybe she was wrong.
Within a second Fiza was on her heels, eyes red like a devil. Or maybe not a devil but definitely his partner. She looked like a devil queen but in green. An unwelcoming grin formed on her cheeks. She walked close to her, so close Riya felt her hair tickle her ears as she leaned in to warn her, “I swear you will regret this the rest of your life loser.” A shiver ran through her spine at the words and for a second she wagered if it was really worth it. There was no way in hell she was getting Fiza off her back now. No matter.
“That’s the future. You worry about yourself right now. Give him the phone and let him see. If you didn’t do anything you don’t need to hide.”
“There’s no need for my phone when you have me. Hear me say that yes I was the one to do this. I did it all. I recorded everything and made these vile posters because I hate you and all your kind!” Fiza hissed looking at the crowd, eyeing all the Underdogs she could make out. “And I hate your so called best friend the most.” That was a lie…she never even met her. But now she didn’t need to see her. “She’s the most stupid, dumb, and useless girl I ever found. Not a tiny bit of regret for all this.” Fiza had come back to her normal posture now, hands folded and lips smiling. “Anything else you want to know?” She turned around in circles as if asking the people. No reply whatsoever.
“Good. Then get on with your blo*dy own business.” As soon as the words were spit out people began to disperse and for once Riya hoped Faisal would do more than just cover up his sister’s mistakes.
Scene Shift: Terrace
“Anya?” Sumedh’s voice was barely audible as he eyed the small figure sitting on top of the ledge. She was dangling her feet out in the open air. Just a little push, or in her case, a tiny lean forward and she would be tumbling down a 4 story building. Sumedh felt bile collect up his throat but he tried hardest not to retch in fear. He walked as slowly as he could without her noticing. If she saw him, she would do something he didn’t wish to see.
Coming closer to her he saw the occasional convulsions in her back. It was her sobbing that probably made it happen. He was close enough. NOW. He reached out, about to grab and pull her down by the shoulders when she turned her body around.
“Don’t!”
“Anya don’t be stupid.” There was nothing better he could say.
“Stop acting like you’re any better than me.” Anya replied through a sob.
“At least I don’t jump down buildings on every small thing.” He was still alert trying to get his hands on her, but she was wary of him.
“Who said I do that?” She turned to look down again, dangling her feet once more. Sumedh closed his eyes and cursed under his breath. Insane. Everybody is insane here. And this is the girl who will enter his family once his father married. He was going to run away the first chance he got.
“So you’re not jumping?” He asked almost curious. She gave him a hearty laugh even though the tears were still rolling down.
“Not so soon. I am not leaving my mother alone to ruin herself in her so called love marriage.” Sumedh took a little offense but decided not to tell her about it. She shifted to the left, patting next to her for Sumedh to sit and so he did.
“Paneer?”
“Paneer??” He repeated the word in an extremely appalled tone. Could it get any worse? This girl was beyond insane. If that was even possible anymore.
“I must be sounding like a madman to you.”
“That you do sound like one. But a cute madman. One who likes to eat paneer before committing suicide.” Sumedh had no idea how dark he sounded.
“I am not committing suicide!” Anya said in almost a yell as she turned to face him. He saw her features as close as he had ever seen them. Her eyes were still red and sparkling but the tears had stopped. He could trace lines of dried salt water on her soft cheeks. They dried quickly considering the chilly wind up there. Was he getting lost? No! That’s weird. You are here to get her off the suicide mission, not make your own.
“This is where I come when I am upset. Its not as often but yeah, whenever I do, I find peace.”
“Its an unlikely place for peace. All I find right now is anxiety and a train racing through my heart.” Sumedh said in an almost joking tone but he was dead serious.
“I should feel the same don’t you think?” She turned to him with the purest and most innocent face he had ever seen.
“You should.”
“But I don’t. It’s weird but I find peace in dangerous things. Sounds so stupid. I always do. I’d think being a nerdy bookworm would make me smarter than to run at things that could cost my life. But I guess I am not so smart after all.”
Sumedh was definitely surprised to hear her talk like this, too worldly and old for a girl her age. “Smart or not. All you need to do is survive.”
Scene Shift: Corridors
Fiza walked farther into the lonely hallways. These rooms were always unused on the second floor. More like the section was closed off to students, but she didn’t give a damn anymore. She had sneaked away into the crowd as it dispersed, desperate to be away from the loud loser. She couldn’t stand that girl or her voice any longer.
As she walked past an open room, an arm snaked out to pull her wrist, slamming her against the untouched walls. A hand firmly clasped her mouth shut. She felt the cold wall pierce her skin through the thin silk cloth as she stared at the shadow in front of her. She made no effort to shake him off nor was she scared of the Underdog even though she should have been.
“Who did it?”
