Chapter 23
Obsessing over something is never good.
Karthik sniffed and continued. His throat closing.
“We both used to work at same office. After our divorce, Gayu used to instigate me, clinging to her new boyfriend, who unfortunately was my friend. It pained my heart. Why should she be smiling after causing me pain ?!! What wrong did I do to loose my love ?!!” Karthik asked more to himself.
“Karthik.” Naira cooed, keeping a hand on his shoulder.
“I don’t want any sympathy, Naira. I was totally broken by her acts. My family supported me but that’s not what I needed. The smiles on their faces faded away. Everyone were shattered and it was only because of me, seeing me depressed. I wanted to free them from this burden.” Karthik said.
“So you thought ending your life would serve that purpose.” She completed him and he gasped.
“How do you know ?!!” he asked.
Naira battled within herself whether to reveal the truth or not, because Shantanu bhai asked her not to.
“Must be bhai. Because only he and Suvarna Maa knew that.” Karthik answered his own question.
“Ohkay. Enough about me. Now its your turn. Why do you tag men as some heartless creatures ?!!” Karthik asked her. He was curious at the same time annoyed.
“I have two people in my life because of whom I think that way. Experience teaches you lessons.” Naira answered.
“But you can’t judge every single person with that mindset.” Karthik argued.
Naira sighed at Karthik’s statement. Of course he is right but her world is so small. So there is no point to change her way of thinking.
“Who are those people ?!!” Karthik asked.
“An obsessed lover and my father.” Naira said.
“Father ?!!” he asked. He sat on the bed facing her with crossed legs.
“Dont take him wrong. He is not any womanizer, just a bit arrogant. He turned that way after Naksh bhai left.” Naira said.
“Care to explain further.” Karthik said.
Naira felt uncomfortable to share her emotions with him but deep inside her heart, she wanted to share everything about herself to him, only him. Karthik on the other hand had already poured his heart out in front of her.
“All the elders took decisions in our family and we, children must obey them. Our wishes were never considered, of course sometimes. Major decisions were theirs. But I never felt bad about it because whatever parents do is good for their children but…” Her voice chocked as tears came to her eyes. Karthik pressed his lips in thin line.
“It’s okay. If you don’t want to share.” Karthik said.
“Sorry to hurt you Karthik but my dad ordered me to marry you.” Naira confessed.
“What ?!!” He screamed. Till date, he thought that she accepted him willingly but just now he came to know that she was forced into this relation.
“Yeah. If Naksh bhai had been there, he would have protested but no, it was me. I used to scold him whenever he went aganist my papa and see he is the one who forced me into this relationship aganist my wish because he knew, he knew that I won’t oppose him.” Naira said.
She closed her eyes and tears came out. He wanted to console her but he also knew that she won’t appreciate it.
“Who was this obsessed lover ?!!” He finally asked after few minutes of silence to lighten the atmosphere.
“Oh !! He was really obsessed with me. He followed me to my college for two years in name of love. I didn’t have the guts to face him or disclose the matter at home. He was a good person. One day, he proposed me and I rejected him. After which he grew more possessive and started beating the boys who were close to me.” Naira said.
Karthik smiled at her.
“Seems like a mad person.” Karthik said.
“Yeah. But that scared me a lot. I mean how can he do like that, beat some guy who just talked to me ?!! So I planned something and confronted him. I was really nervous. He asked me to marry him but I refused saying that I will marry once he gets settled in his life. I meant like when he gets a job.” Naira said.
“Oh !! So he didn’t come back ?!!” Karthik asked.
“Nope, actually I said that just to free myself because I didn’t have any feelings for him. I haven’t seen him from then.” Naira confessed.
“And when did all this happen ?!!” Karthik asked smugly. He was now trying to surpress his laughter. Naira narrowed her eyes.
“In my final year. I hope he is settled now. He really was a kind person.” Naira said, lost in her thoughts.
Karthik nodded and slept on the bed again.
“Good night Naira.” Karthik said.
“Good night Karthik.” Naira wished him and slept on the other side of the bed. Far away from him.
With that, both of them slept peacefully. Only if they knew that sharing fears and problems will help them a lot.
