Chapter 9
Her pain. His suffering !!
Karthik looked at her sleeping peacefully on the hospital bed. Once he had brought her to the hospital, she had been given painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs for the pain and swelling from the injury and local anesthetic and sedatives to prevent pain from the procedure on her foot.
It had taken a little over an hour for the doctor to stich up the gash on her foot. She had a severe sprain that required tight bandage around her right ankle and heel but fortunately there was no fracture.
She would have to hop on her left leg for the next week and avoid touching her right leg on the ground. The doctor had advised to limit her walking to minimum possible. Karthik took in all information provided as he wanted to take care of her with all the precautions.
As he waited for the sedatives to wear off, and her to gain counsiouness,Karthik recalled her cry, her pain and her tears. “Why does her pain bother me so much ?!!” he questioned himself.

Naira opened her eyes gradually. The room had soft, dim lighting that was soothing. She felt light headed. Then she recalled the cradle falling on her leg and everything that had followed until Karthik buckled up her seatbelt.
She turned her head and saw him sitting next to her bed. She went through myriads of emotions and felt overwhelmed. ” Karthik , why can’t I feel my right leg ?!! What did the doctor say ?!! ” She asked him, all confused.
He looked up to find her awake but very drowsy. He leaned forward and caressed her forehead and spontaneously said, “Sorry, Naira.They had to amputate your right leg. But don’t worry. I am here. I’ll always take care of you.”
Naira’s eyes became very wide with shock. She jerked up and removed the sheets to see her bandaged ankle. She turned towards him indignantly and found him holding back his laughter. “That was very mean of you.” she said angrily.
“Sorry. Couldn’t resist it. You are fine.” He told her everything the doctor had said. Naira couldn’t believe she had 5 stitches on her ankle for such a small injury. She looked at him and nodded her head at every information that was provided to her.
Karthik stared at her. She looked like a petulant child with her dishevelled, long hair loose and hanging around her face and shoulders. Her eyes were red and puffy with all the crying but yet she looked breathtakingly beautiful.
She looked like one of those cute smurfs. His own personal Smurf. He shook his head and scolded his mind for thinking on this track when she was lying there in front of him all injured and in pain.
As if on cue , Vrushika Bhabhi appeared at the door. She went around and hugged Naira.
“Are you ohkay ?!! Does it pain too much.” She asked Naira. Naira nodded her head in a ‘No’.
“Well even if it does. I have something for you that will make all the pain go away.” Shantanu bhai said from the door waving Two Cadbury Silks at her.
She smiled sheepishly at him and forwarded her hand. He gave the chocolates to Naira and she hogged on them as if a caveman. She really was hungry with all the pain and suffering. Also she had not eaten anything for dinner which added more hunger to her state.
Karthik looked at shantanu bhai with all the respect he had. He had made a girl with 5 stitches on her leg and suffering from immense pain, happy in like 2 mins. Shantanu observed his brother and patted him on the back.
“Which girl doesn’t like chocolates ?!!” Shantanu said smugly and shrugged his shoulders.

After Naira had been discharged from the hospital, Karthik picked her up and put her in a wheelchair provided by the hospital to take her to the car. He pushed the chair as Vrushika Bhabhi and Shantanu bhai walked along side.
At the car, he helped her sit in the front seat.He got in the drivers seat and drove towards the house. Shantanu bhai and Vrushika bhabhi got into the other car, the one in which they had followed them.
As Karthik drove towards the villa, he saw that Naira was already fast asleep in her seat. She was sitting with her head resting on the back of the seat, her soft face slightly up-turned, and her hair that looked like a dark-brown satin curtain, partially covering her right cheek. She looked exhausted.
Once again he felt something turn in his chest. He had a strong urge to hold her tight. To comfort her. To take away all her pain. He didn’t know why but her pain bothered him a lot. Her pain was causing his suffering !!

Naira woke up with a sudden jerk. She looked around and saw that they had reached Goenka Villa. Before she could move, Karthik came to her side and opened the door for her.
He forwarded a hand to her. She looked up at him and held his hand. Vrushika bhabi came upto her at the same time and held her from the other side. She almost lost balance twice as they went to the entrance, but Karthik caught her on the right time.
Together they managed to get halfway up the staircase. Then frustrated, Karthik just picked her up and took her up the rest of the steps. He set her down on their bed fully aware that she was hot with embarassment. He himself felt pretty warm but it was neither from embarassment nor from tiredness.
She leaned back and rested her head against the pillows and cushions and immediately feel asleep.Karthik switched off the bright lights and switched on the dim lights. He was about to leave but on a second thought he turned around to look at her again.
Without any hesitation he bent down and kissed her on her forehead. Then he went off to find some peace for himself.
