Chapter 6
I lay in bed thinking about her. She looked so beautiful when I saw her. Her smile, her anger, everything about her is so beautiful. I felt so bad not talking or even looking at her, but it’s the only way I know to control my feelings.
‘Hey Sayyam, you’re not in bed yet? I wanted to talk to you, I’m worried about Krishna.’ Yuvani came into my room and sat next to me.
‘I know what happened with Yuvan, he told me. I know you’re worried about her too.’ She said. I sat up and looked at her confused.
‘I saw you comforting her in the garden when she was crying, it’s good that you were there for her.’
‘I just did what Yuvan wanted.’ I looked away.
‘So, you just did that for Yuvan and not because you care for her?’ She asked.
I was confused, I felt she was trying to imply something else.
‘Yuvan told me to look out for her and make sure she’s ok.’ I started to feel my cheeks getting warm.
‘Ok…I believe you.’ She smiled.
‘Anyway, Yuvani it’s getting late. I’m tired.’ I wanted to end the conversation. I lay down and turned to face the other direction. She left the room. Did she know? Did she know about my feelings for Krishna?
It was the next morning, I drove to Krishna’s house. I knocked on the door. There she was stood in front of me. Her soft brown hair blowing in the breeze. She looked so sweet and innocent.
‘Hi.’ She said quietly with a smile.
I looked away and didn’t answer. I walked inside and went into the kitchen to look for Soumya Aunty.
‘Ma isn’t home, she’s out.’
I turned round, it was Krishna. I walked ahead to leave the kitchen, but she stood in front of me. I moved to the left but she stood in front of me again.
‘Why are you avoiding me?’ She asked.
‘I’m not.’ I said looking down, trying to avoid eye contact.
‘Yes you are. Is it because of the other night when I was crying? Did I make you feel uncomfortable? I’m sorry if I did, I didn’t mean to get upset. You were there and-.’ She just kept on talking.
Suddenly, I don’t know what came over me. I pushed her against the wall. I stood close to her, my face was inches from hers. My arms were either side of hers.
‘You talk too much.’ I whispered in her ear.
‘Krishna!’
I moved away, I heard Soumya Aunty calling her, she had just come home. She walked into the kitchen.
‘Sayyam, you’re here already?’
I felt so flustered and uncomfortable about what had just happened. I could see that Aunty was struggling with her shopping bags so I took them from her hands. I took Aunty to the living room and sat down to talk to her. I could see Krishna watching us from the corner of my eye.
‘Sayyam, I asked you to come over because there’s a few jobs that need doing round the house. Your uncle isn’t with us anymore and Krishna and I can’t do it ourselves. There’s some wood that needs chopping in the front garden.’
I agreed to help and went out to the garden to start working.
It was mid afternoon, it was a very hot and humid day. I was chopping the wood but struggling with the heat. I stopped to wipe the sweat on my face when someone held a bottle of water in front of me. I looked across and it was Krishna.
‘Here, have some water.’ She said sweetly.
I took the bottle and drank nearly the whole bottle. I had been in the heat for over 2 hours.
‘Why don’t you take a rest or at least let me help you?’ She asked.
‘I don’t need anyone’s help.’ I said to her sternly.
‘Well, tough. You’re going to get my help anyway.’ She kneeled on the ground to pick up the wood I chopped to put away.
A few hours later and we were finished, it was late afternoon. Krishna walked up to me.
‘You know, I have been helping you for over 2 hours Sayyam and not once have you spoken to me.’ She said confidently.
‘I was working, I didn’t need to speak to you.’ I said.
‘Ok baba, you didn’t need to speak to me. But I thought we were friends? The other night you said we could become friends?’
I stepped closer to her, I wanted to tell her I saw her as more than just a friend. I looked into her eyes.
‘Friends?’ I whispered.
‘Hey you two!’ It was a familiar voice. I stepped back and saw Yuvani walking up to us.
‘Hi Krishna!’ Yuvani hugged Krishna.
‘Come in Yuvani.’ Krishna was so happy to see her.
‘Yes I will in a bit, you go in.’ She watched Krishna go inside and walked up to me. I was in a trance watching Krishna.
‘Sayyam…Sayyam!’ Yuvani was clicking her fingers in front of my eyes. I realised what I was doing and faced Yuvani.
‘What was going on here?’ She raised her eyebrows and smiled at me.
‘N-nothing, Soumya Aunty asked me to chop wood and Krishna was helping.’
‘That’s it?’she questioned.
‘Yes, that’s it.’ I said sternly and went inside, Yuvani followed.
After dinner we all sat down in the living area.
‘Thank you so much for helping us beta.’ Soumya Aunty said to me.
‘You don’t need to thank me Aunty. You know if you ever need any help, I will be there for you.’ I smiled at her.
‘Really beta? There is a lot more that I need help with around the house, would you mind staying here a few days to help us out?’
I was shocked and flustered. I didn’t know what to say. I wanted to help but I need to stay away from Krishna. I looked ahead at Krishna and she was looking at me in shock.
‘Of course he will Aunty, I will bring his things over.’ I looked next to me. Yuvani was smiling when she said this. I gave her an annoyed look.
‘Thank you so much Sayyam.’ Aunty seemed so happy, I couldn’t let her down. I smiled at her.
‘I have to go now, Sayyam and Krishna, remember it’s Golu bhaiyyas party tomorrow with his friends. He wants you both there.’
‘Golu is Yuvans cousin brother. We all grew up together. I was looking forward to seeing him again, we were close but lost contact over the years. Im excited to go to the party, it will take my mind off these increasing feelings inside me. Who knows what tomorrow will bring??
Precap- Sayyam and Krishna go to Golus party.
Hi everyone. It will start getting interesting now, I promise! Shaz x
