Author’s POV

The blazing sun has brought a new day, and the colorful glow of the pleasant morning contains new hopes. The flowers and trees are filled with new vitality, and there is a new generation of people who have started a new day and forge ahead in the morning.

The surrounding reveal a perfectly ordinary ward whose walls had been sealed with a shiny layer of white and blue, a hue that was welcoming from the sunrise to eventide. The curtains hanging at the window were a creamy brown, the kind that glows golden in the daylight.

Separated by a curtain, there are two beds, one of which is occupied by a tiny figure attached with numerous wires.

As the curtains open the deep gold of the room becomes the flamboyant buttercup yellow of every daydreamers wanderings. A fresh air rushed to the front. The curtain flatters here and there due to breeze coming from the window.

The only sounds that could be heard were the gentle breeze rustling the curtains and the beeping of the monitors.

The atmosphere is calm.

Opening the door, a nurse enters the room and checks the patient.

While the nurse was doing the normal check up, she felt the patient doing some movements.

In these six months, it was the first time the patient showed any sign. Rushing towards the landline, the nurse dialed some numbers.

“Dr. Sarah patient number 124 is showing some movements!” the nurse exclaimed happily over the landline.

“Do the remaining checkups. I’m coming” came the doctor’s reply from the other side.

Dr. Sarah was one of the best neurologist in the hospital. She was cheerful and always carried a positive aura around her. She was an empathetic doctor who treated her patients with care. Her extrovert and jolly nature was the thing that her patients loved a lot.

Minutes later, the doctor entered the ward in green scrubs, her black hair tied low in a pony tail as she monitored the patient. After she was done, one could see a proud smile on her face.

“What happened doctor?” asked the nurse noticing the doctor’s happy expression.

“Maya, Riddhima is recovering.”

“That’s great ma’am.”

“I have gave her the necessary medications. Look after her and inform me once she gains her consciousness” said the doctor to the nurse.

“Yes ma’am” came Maya’s reply.

Riddhima’s POV

I woke up to the acrid smell of something, like disinfectant. The stark smell of bleach was overwhelming and it was invading my nostrils.

I scrunched my eyes at the bright light that was sipping through my closed eyelids. I felt powerless and heavy. I could not move my hand, my head or my body.

I slowly started blinking, desperately trying to open my eyes and see what’s around me.

Where am I?

As I blinked rapidly, the blinding light slowly subsided I could take a look around my surroundings. I looked like a hospital.

I glanced around and took in the deserted, blue and white colour schemed hospital bedroom. The room was pristine clean and optimistic. No sound could be heard apart from my heavy breathing and the beep beep sound of the monitors.

How long have I been here?

I shut my eyes, trying to remember what had exactly happened. Then it all hits me with a bang. The memory of it all starts to occupy my thoughts.

I was driving my car and suddenly a truck….

I felt my body going numb after recalling the dreadful incident.

Realization hits me hard as I remember Sejal was also with me.

Sejal.

How is she?

And most importantly where is she?

I tried to get up but a sudden pain shot across my left hand. I noticed that my left hand was bandaged with an IV drip attached to it. I could feel a slight pain in my right hand, which had some bruises on it. I was dressed in a blue-coloured hospital gown and the lower half of my body was covered with a duvet.

“Here take these medicines dear. You will feel better” came a sweet voice.

I lifted my head to see the owner of the voice.

It was a woman in her mid-twenties dressed in a doctor’s uniform. She had a fair skin with black eyes which were lined with kohl. Her hair was midnight-black and it tumbled over her shoulders. She looked beautiful.

But who was she?

“Hi Riddhima, I am Sarah, your doctor” she replied calmly.

“Hi” I replied her giving a weak smile.

“Here, take your medicines. You will feel better” she said forwarding few tablets and a glass of water.

Taking the medicines from her hand, I put them in my mouth and gulped them down with water.

“How are you feeling now?” she asked after a few minutes.

“Better” I said as I felt my body relaxing.

There were many questions running in my mind but I had no one answer them. Should I ask Dr. Sarah or not. I started fumbling my fingers not knowing what to do.

“Riddhima, it’s said that one must never hide anything from a doctor and lawyer” said Dr. Sarah with a chuckle.

“Dr. Sarah.. Umm..”

“First of all stop calling me Dr. Sarah, call me Sarah. I don’t think think it is that hard to pronounce. And secondly don’t hesitate to ask what’s in your mind” she said with a friendly smile.

“Sarah.. Umm.. How.. How long have I been here?” I asked slowly.

“I has been six months since you have been admitted here” she replied after a pause.

“Six months!”

“Yes dear, six months. In these six months, you were in coma. But, by god’s grace you are absolutely fine now.”

“Coma!”

“You went through an accident due to which you had lost a lot of blood. When there is no blood flow to a major part of the brain stem or loss of blood accompanied with swelling, coma can occur” Sarah explained.

But where is Sejal. She was the one who was with me.

“Sejal.. she was also with me. How is she? Where is she? Can I meet her?”

“Sejal’s blood level was under 30% when she was admitted in the hospital. Her condition was critical” she paused for a while, “I’m sorry to say but..”

“But what..” I asked desperately.

“Sejal is no more. Due to extreme blood loss, we couldn’t save her.”

Sejal is no more. What?

“How.. how is this possible? She.. she was with me during the accident. If I’m alive, how come she is no more. You might have been mistaken Sarah. You.. you might have been mistaken….”

“It’s true Riddhima. Believe it or not. Sejal have left us six months back” Sarah repeated her words.

I felt as if my entire world was collapsing. Complete hopelessness converted into tears that rain down my face at lightning speed.

“No! This.. this cannot happen” I murmured.

“Sejal.. Sejal cannot leave her Riddhu..She cannot…” I choked upon my words as they failed to come out of my mouth.

“Handle yourself Riddhima” Sarah said rubbing my back.

“Sarah.. how… how can Sejal leave her Riddhu? How.. how.. ca.. can she…” I cried my heart out hugging Sarah.

Streams of tears flowed faster than my heartbeat.

My heart was screaming.

I felt empty.

I felt dejected.

I felt lonely.

Author’s POV

“All deaths are sudden, no matter how gradual the dying may be.” ~Michael McDowell

Life and Death are beyond our control. We can’t control where, how, or when we are born and we can’t control where, how, or when we may die.

Losing a loved one is arguably the hardest thing most people will go through. The loss of someone special and close to you, be that a friend, partner or family member is devastating.

Pain and sadness come about as a natural response to grief. One feels sad, broken, devastated and lifeless. But it doesn’t means we loose our hopes.

Death is where it all starts, death is not the end.

Endings are not always bad. Most of the times, they are just beginnings in the disguise.

Same goes for Riddhima.

This was the beginning of her new journey.
A journey which will be full of happiness.
A journey where there will be no loneliness.

This ending will mark the beginning of a journey which would enlighten her darken world.

This journey which would change her life completely.
