Namita Thapar Highlights Alarming Rise in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in India

Namita Thapar, a renowned business entrepreneur and judge on Shark Tank India, has recently brought attention to the escalating cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in India. As the Executive Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Thapar has long been a proponent of health awareness and education. Her recent message about NAFLD has initiated a critical discussion around this often-neglected health issue.

In a video shared on social media, Thapar explained that NAFLD is a condition where excess fat builds up in liver cells, causing liver inflammation and damage. Unlike liver diseases caused by alcohol consumption, NAFLD affects individuals who consume little to no alcohol.

Thapar’s concerns are supported by startling statistics. A recent study conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) revealed that 38% of Indians suffer from fatty liver, with the prevalence among children at 35%. This trend is particularly worrisome given the rising rates of obesity and metabolic disorders in India.

Thapar emphasized that NAFLD is a silent threat that can lead to severe liver damage and even liver failure if not addressed. She underlined the significance of education and awareness in preventing and managing NAFLD. By recognizing the risk factors and symptoms, individuals can take proactive measures to safeguard their liver health.

In her video, Thapar detailed the risk factors for NAFLD, which include obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. People with a family history of NAFLD or those who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk. Symptoms of NAFLD can include fatigue, abdominal discomfort, and elevated liver enzymes. Thapar urged the importance of early detection and treatment, recommending a healthy diet, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight as preventive measures.

Professionally, Namita Thapar has been seen as a judge on Shark Tank India, continuing to inspire and educate through her work in both business and health advocacy.
