Actor Akshay Kelkar, who is currently essaying the male lead in the show Nima Denzongpa is all set to portray a 40 plus character on screen. Akhsay who is just 28 talked about it in a recent interview with BT.
He shared, “Every actor takes his or her own call. I am completely okay with playing a mature character on screen. My only objective is to do justice to whatever role I take up. If you look at the positive side, playing an older character is quite challenging. I don’t think I would get typecast in any way. Also, thanks to social media, people get to see the real me and can figure out my actual age, even if I am playing a father to youngsters on screen.”
He adds, “I have played supporting characters in Marathi serials but somehow, I haven’t been able to crack the auditions for Marathi shows when it comes to lead roles. The makers tell me that I look too young. Having said that, I am happy doing Hindi TV. It has given me an opportunity to reach a wider audience. I have no regrets whatsoever.”
When asked about his opinion on whether social media followers play a big part during the casting process, he says, “I feel an actor’s potential shouldn’t be judged merely by the number of social media followers that they have. It’s not right and I strongly condemn it. There is a vast difference between lip-syncing on Instagram Reels and performing in front of the camera. But there are a few projects wherein actors are cast simply because of their blue tick profiles or impressive number of social media followers. Some friends of mine have faced the repercussions of having fewer followers on virtual platforms, and have lost out on good roles.”
