“I need a divorce”, I shouted again. Mr. Maheshwari laughed and walked over to the bedside table. He picked up the water jug and walked back towards me. I smiled and walked towards him. He gave me a confused expression but, continued walking. We stopped in front of each other and he splashed the water on my face. I forwarded my hands and took out the handkerchief from his pocket. I cleared the water from my face and gave it back to him. “How dare you?”, he asked pointing his finger at me. “Why should I tell you?”, I replied. He twisted my hand and said, “Don’t try to be over smart or else, you need to bear more pain.” I let out a faint laugh and replied, “Do you think it hurts anymore? Anyways, I don’t have time to talk to you. I need a divorce.” He laughed and said, “You can’t have any wishes.” “I’m not your slave that I’ll do whatever you wish. I’ve already bore a lot and now, I just need a divorce”, I replied. Mr. Maheshwari twisted my hand tighter and said, “You should’ve understood in these few days that you’re not less than a slave in my life.” He pushed me hard while my hand hit against the corner of the table making it bleed. He walked towards the cupboard and took out the first aid. I smiled and walked towards him. He applied Dettol on the cotton while I forwarded my hands. He cleaned the blood and aided the cut. “Thanks”, I blurted out and walked out of the room.

I was climbing down the stairs when the doorbell rang. I quickly went down and opened the door. I saw maa and Swara di standing together. The diary pages again flashed through my mind. I was wondering how I could get to know what happened when maa shook me and said, “Ragini, where are you lost?” I came out of my thoughts and smilingly replied, “Nowhere. I’m sorry. Come inside.” Maa went and sat in the hall while Swara di went back to her room. Lakshya came down and asked, “Any improvement?” Maa replied coughing, “No.” “I’ll get you some water maa”, I said. Maa smiled at me while I walked towards the kitchen wondering what needed improvement. “You’ve got a really nice life partner for yourself”, I heard maa saying. “I wish he had the sense to understand that”, I murmured boasting about myself and later, smiled to myself.

I came into the hall with a glass full of water while maa said, “The next appointment is next month I guess, on 2nd.” “What appointment?”, I asked forwarding the glass to maa. She was about to reply when she took the glass from my hand and said, “What happened to your hand? Why is there so much of blood clotting?” I quickly hid my hands behind my back and said, “It’s nothing maa. My hands are perfectly fine.” Maa kept the glass on the table beside and pulled my hands from behind my back. “What is fine? Nothing is fine. How did this happen?”, asked Maa pointing at my wrist. “Nothing maa”, I replied. “Ragini, tell me what happened”, said maa. “Maa actually..umm.. Mr. I mean Ku”, I said and was about to complete when the doorbell rang. I quickly moved my hands away and said, “I’ll see.” “No, you both go to your room. My friends have come”, replied maa. “Okay sure maa”, remarked Lakshya. Maa went to open the door while Lakshya held my hand and dragged me to the kitchen.

“Mr. Maheshwari, it’s hurting. Please leave my hand”, I said trying to free my hand. “Just shut up”, shouted Mr. Maheshwari and entered the kitchen. “What did you think that you’ll tell maa everything?”, he asked pushing me on the floor. “I swear I wasn’t telling maa what you did”, I replied trying to get up. “Don’t try to justify yourself. I very well know what you were upto”, said Mr. Maheshwari. He walked towards the gas stove and lit it. “What are you doing? I didn’t want to tell maa anything”, I said being scared. He let out a faint laugh and walked towards the cupboards. He took out a packet of camphor and turned towards me. “Now, you’ll always think thousand times before telling anything to anyone”, he said taking out a cube of camphor from the packet. “I wasn’t going to tell today also. Please don’t do this”, I said moving away. “Don’t dare to move”, said Mr. Maheshwari. “Give me your hand”, he added. I hid my hands behind my back and nodded my head in a no. I tried to run away from the kitchen but, Mr. Maheshwari caught hold of my left hand and pulled me towards the stove. He placed the camphor on my palm and held my hand above the stove. I closed my eyes in pain while the tears rolled down my cheeks. After around 10 minutes Mr. Maheshwari freed my burnt hand and walked out of the kitchen switching off the gas stove. I sat by the cupboard and cried on my fate. After about half an hour later I went back to Mr. Maheshwari’s room composing myself.

I walked into the room and laid down my suitcase on the floor. Mr. Maheshwari stared at me and asked, “What are you doing?” I ignored his question and packed my luggage. “Answer me”, he shouted. I got up from the floor locking my suitcase and said, “I’m going to Taneja Mansion. Please send the divorce papers there.” I pulled the trolley and was about to get out of the room when Mr. Maheshwari said, “A step ahead and I’ll kill your brother.” I immediately stopped at the doorstep while he continued, “My revenge will also be over.” I turned around and looked at him shockingly. After a fraction of seconds I asked, “What revenge?”
