LOST TIME – PART 2.2

Dadi: Dr. Mehra, Aap? Come inside, please!

Dr. Mehra: Yes Ma’am, actually Sir and I had to discuss a few things about Ma’a-

Vansh (interrupting): About one of the patient’s health. I wasn’t going to the hospital today, but this meeting was important, so I called Dr. Mehra home. (looking at Riddhima) I was telling you, na?

Riddhima: I know but look at yourself at Vansh. (walking closer to him) Why are you panicking? What’s wrong?

Vansh inhaled a deep breath and shook his head, before looking back at Riddhima. She didn’t know anything yet, and he’d nothing to worry about. However, he couldn’t avoid the prickly feeling within him. It almost wrecked his confidence and made him nervous.

Vansh: Nothing. Dr. Mehra, let’s go to my study and have the meeting. Dadi, Can you send my black coffee and a milk tea there in a while?

As Dadi nodded her head, Vansh led the way toward his study while Dr. Mehra followed him. Riddhima stared at Vansh’s retreating figure in doubt and wrecked her head for any bit of information that she might’ve carelessly forgotten about. But she came up with nothing. She didn’t know why Vansh was behaving strangely since the morning, but there had to be a reason.

And she needed to find that out.

Chanchal: Riddhima! What’re you thinking?

Riddhima (jumping out of her reverie): Nothing, Chachi. I was just thinking… Why don’t I prepare tea and coffee for everyone? Anyhow, I’ve been taking rest for too many days, this can be a fresh break.

Aryan (in humor): You need a break from taking a break?

The entire family laughed at that, reckoning Aryan for his humor. Dadi smiled as the entire family enjoyed the moments together and mentally thanked God for blessing her family and normalizing everything in their family.

Riddhima: But seriously, Who wants what? Coffee, how many counts?

Dadi: You should take rest, Riddhima. Chanchal and I can manage it together.

Riddhima: Offo, Dadi. Don’t act like Vansh; I’m seriously fine.

Ishani: Fine, then. But let me come help you, so you don’t have anything to stress over. Come on!

The two of them walked away to the kitchen after head-counting for either of the beverages. Riddhima decided to go to the study to serve Vansh and Dr. Mehra, while Ishani was supposed to go the living room to hand-over everyone’s beverages.

————

Dr. Mehra: Sorry, Sir. I know you didn’t want to schedule any meetings today, and neither has Ma’am’s dosages gotten over, but you know how important it is to get the frequent updates. This isn’t a very simple case.

Vansh (nodding): I know, Dr. Mehra. You do not have to worry about that, at all. Riddhima’s health is my first priority right now and I wouldn’t compromise on it.

Dr. Mehra: Yes, Sir. So, I was going through Ma’am’s reports last evening again and she needs a lot more time to recover completely. On the outside, it probably looks like she’s all fit and fine, but she has several internal injuries. First, because the bullet has pierced right through the center of her brain, so she cannot be stressed. There can be a lot of consequences to that. And…

Vansh: Consequences like, affecting her mental state?

As the question floated in the tension within the room, a silence enveloped the two of them and Dr. Mehra looked down at the table.

Vansh: Answer me, Dr. Mehra! I’ve all the rights to know about my wife’s health.

Dr. Mehra (inhaling deeply): A loss of mental state is one of the many possibilities, Sir. And also, because she’s under heavy medical dosage, there can be side-effects to that. We need to be very cautious with what Ma’am is doing…

Vansh: Why side-effects? Didn’t you tell me that you’d rechecked quite a few times to ensure that these medicines wouldn’t have any consequences?

Dr. Mehra: We did, Sir. However, Ma’am is under such high medication right now, with each of her tablet catering to some or the other thing, that we can’t really say what would clash and cause an after-effect.

Vansh: And what about…

He paused mid-way and stood up from his place, walking over to the window to look outside. He’d never be able to forgive himself for doing this. He didn’t have an option, but he felt too ruthless, too uncaring. Why had setting priorities and doing the right thing, begun feeling so wrong – so unjust?

Dr. Mehra: Sir, you’d told me that there was some boulder present in that place, I presume? Something you’d saved Ma’am’s head from hitting, as far as I remember.

Vansh nodded his head and shoved his hands into the pockets, embracing himself for the worst. After that fateful day, he hadn’t seen much of a hope. The tables had turned so spontaneously, that he didn’t even know if Mrs. Anupriya Raisinghania and Kabir had lost or won.

Dr. Mehra: Sir, but that boulder hit Ma’am somewhere else, injuring her womb internally. Hence, the chances of Ma’am being able to conceive again in the future might be very slim.

As Vansh readied himself to speak, he heard the breaking of glass behind him and quickly turned around, his eyes immediately falling on her. She looked at him in disbelief, her eyes widened and for a brief period, her gaze constantly orbited between the two men in the room.

Vansh looked at her and panicked, knowing very well that this may harm her health. He strode a quick few steps toward her and held her by her shoulders, trying to calm her.

Vansh: Riddhima, Shush. Everything is okay, there’s nothing to worry about. Dr. Mehta was just…

Riddhima: I won’t be able to conceive again? Is this baby my last ray of hope for living another childhood?

Vansh looked down and held her fingers tightly, trying to comfort her in any way possible. Why did she come here, when he’d clearly asked Dadi to serve them their tea and coffee?

Vansh: Riddhima, that child… You’re not pregnant…

Riddhima slapped him right across his face and he felt the pain sting within the insides of him. The sound echoed in the study and he continued looking down, not wanting to see how anger and sorrow had started bubbling within her.

She held him tightly by his shoulders and,

Riddhima: Look at me, Vansh! This baby isn’t just mine. It is as much as yours as it is mine. How can you say something so harsh? This baby is yours!

Vansh: Riddhima, I know this is a lot of information for you, but please calm down. You need to take rest now.

Riddhima: I’m not going anywhere with you. (moving away from him) Just don’t come near me. If you don’t want a baby, I don’t care. But I’m not going to abort my baby.

Vansh looked at Riddhima, terrified. She was crying in her anger, despising him in more than one possible way and her forehead was soaked in tension. He was petrified that the consequences of this situation might turn out to be worse than he’d imagined.

Vansh: I’m not asking you to abort the baby, Riddhima. I would never ask that of you. (in an exasperated tone) But after Kabir shot you that day, your lower stomach hit against a boulder and because of the internal injuries, we had to abort the baby. Please understand, I didn’t have any other option.

Riddhima (laughing): Are you kidding me, Vansh? You didn’t have an option? You could’ve saved the baby instead of me.

Vansh (fiercely): Riddhima, you were barely a month pregnant. Not 7-8 months pregnant that I could’ve saved the baby. How would the baby have grown outside if you weren’t alive? Have you lost your mind?

However, as the words floated in the air, between Vansh and Riddhima, she felt herself weaking and her knees buckled. She felt her surrounding blackening and then, she fell down on the ground. Vansh ran to her and tapped on her cheeks, trying to bring her to senses.

A few moments later,

Dr. Mehra: Sir, I think, I’ve to check Ma’am. Can we take her to one of the rooms?

He picked her up hurriedly and rushed her to one of the nearby rooms, his heart clenching in fear. Why the h’ck had he not locked the door to his study?

————

The entire family waited outside the room, anxiously. Neither of them knew what had suddenly happened to her, but that wasn’t the priority then. They prayed for Riddhima to wake-up, after which they could join the dots and understand what had led to what.

Dr. Mehra (coming out): Ma’am wants to see one of you.

Dadi: Vansh, you go inside. We’ll see her later.

Vansh nodded and entered the room in small steps. He didn’t know how to face her after all that had happened. He couldn’t see her sorrow-stricken face, pale and mourning for the loss of a child.

Riddhima: Excuse me? Who are you?

That’d be it for this episode. I know y’all hate me, but please hold on to see where the story leads. I’m a Riansh fan too, and I’m not going to just go around killing characters to make you guys sad. Please, please tell me what you thought of this episode and if any changes are needed, please do suggest. Like always, thank you for reading!

Oh, and also, why do you guys think Riddhima asked Vansh who he is?
