“But I don’t have anything to wear, Swara!”
“You do have clothes, duh!”
“I meant for parties!”
“It’s just the four of us Ragini. Wait. Lemme just check out your wardrobe!”
“Okay.”
After rummaging through her wardrobe, Swara felt Ragini was right. She had clothes, yes. But all casual ones. None for parties. Swara scratched her head, confused and frustrated. Confused because she couldn’t understand what should Ragini wear, and frustrated because she knew they didn’t have time for shopping at all. Only if she had informed Ragini about this party in the morning. Not that she had forgotten to inform her. She did go to inform her, but found her asleep. Later, Ariba Bi told her that Ragini wasn’t well. So she decided to let her rest.
“Ragu, come with me.”
“Where?”
“To my room, duh!”
“But why?”
“Stop irritating me like Lucky! Just come with me.”
The mere mention of Laksh’s name brought back the morning memories. Her skin ached for his touch. Her nape wanted his hot breath. Her body needed his warmth. Gosh Ragini! You need to stop this. What’s wrong with you? He’s Laksh. Why’re you thinking about him? She breathed deeply to calm her accelerating heart.
“Just stand here and lemme look for you. I hope one of my dresses will fit you!”
Swara’s voice brought her out of her trance.
“Huh? Yeah!”
Swara went through her many dresses. “Which one?” she muttered to herself as she expertly inspected each one in turn. She picked up a navy blue strappy cross front skater dress and turned to Ragini.
“How’s this one?”
Ragini looked at the dress in awe. She touched the fabric, it was soft and smooth under her fingers. Though it was a bit revealing, she was already falling in love with it.
“I can tell you really like it.”
Ragini glanced at Swara. “Are you sure you don’t mind? What are you going to wear?”
Swara laughed at her innocence.
“You silly girl, I have hundreds of dresses I can wear. Now, try it on!”
“Now?”
“Yes now! Hurry up! We don’t have much time. It’s already 6, and Kav will be arriving around 7-7:30. We have to do your makeup as well.” Swara said, striding out the door.
Ragini quickly undressed herself and put on the dress. Hesitantly, she walked to the full-length mirror and stared at herself.
“Oh my god!” she breathed. Is this me? She looked different. She looked pretty.
“Are you ready yet?” Swara burst in.
“Well, well. You know I never looked good in that dress. But on you, it’s a different story altogether. Laksh’s going to love this! I hope he knows how to breathe properly when he sees a pretty woman!”
“Why would he love this?” Ragini asked.
“Uhm.. Time for your makeup!”

Laksh was standing alone at the decorated terrace. None of the girls had shown up yet. Not that he really cared. He was here only to keep Swara’s heart. Soft and cool breeze made him feel relieved. He had made his decision. He knew it would be difficult, but he had to do it. It was important for all. He took out his phone to dial up a number that was now familiar to him. Not reachable. Next, he dialled another number.
“Hello? Arun? Yes, I’m fine. Buddy, I needed your help. Yes. No no. I’m trying to find someone. Yes. I’ll text you the details. Do let me know about it soon. Yes. It’s important. Thanks bro! Bye.”
He started typing out his message when he saw Swara ascending the stairs to the terrace. She looked adorable in her yellow sundress. But he didn’t notice her for too long because he glimpsed someone directly behind her. Laksh couldn’t make out who it was because it looked as though the woman was hiding and trying to draw attention. He noticed that Swara had a smirk on her face, and at once knew she was upto something mischievous.
At once, Swara stepped aside to reveal the woman behind her. All Laksh could do was to stare at her as though he were in a trance. Ragini looked enchanting in that navy-blue dress, her long hair styled in a loose bun. The dress fit her curves in the right places. Yes, the dress was a bit revealing, her smooth cleavage could be seen clearly and not to forget, her long smooth legs were tantalizing, since the dress hemmed above her thighs. But still, she looked angelic.
Laksh came to his senses and then just realised that his mouth was agape in marvel as he gazed off at Ragini. Her eyes clashed with his. She looked nervous as she continuously pulled the hem of the dress down to cover her exposed legs. A dangerous chemistry exploded between them pulling him to her like a moth to flame.
“Laksh?” Swara’s voice brought him back to reality. But still he couldn’t take his eyes off her. The force was so strong that he took an involuntary step back, fearing he wouldn’t be able to control himself around her.
“I.. I have some important work. I’ll be back soon.” He hastily left.
Ragini stood frozen. Her stomach churned as she stared at his retreating shoulders in disbelief. She had made a special effort to dress up. For him? Well, knowing that she was uncomfortable in short dresses, yet she made the special effort to look good. Was he not happy with her dress? Did she look weird? Did she look bad? But Swara told her she looked amazing. Maybe to keep her heart? But why was she so bothered about Laksh’s reaction? He did not compliment her. But why did his compliments meant so much to her all of a sudden?
“Kav! Thank god you came!” Ragini’s chain of thoughts broke when Swara yelled with delight.
“Shona! How could I not come to meet you? Hey Ragini! How’re you now?”
“Thank you, I’m fine now. By the way you look so pretty.” Ragini looked at Kavita and the dress she was in. A maroon peplum dress. Elegant and classy, she thought.
“And you look so s*xy Ragini! This dress is so beautiful!”
“Thank you.” Ragini mumbled, blushing profusely. She had never been called s*xy.
“Where’s Laksh?”
“Oh he has some work. He’ll be back soon.” Swara winked.
“Oh, all right!”
The girls sat down on the mattress neatly kept on the terrace floor. All talking about themselves.
“ Guys, you both chat. I’ll be back in a jiffy. Work call, you see?” Swara showed her flashing phone and went inside to answer it.
“So Ragini, how long have you known Swara?”
“Uhm.. A year or so.”
“Oh. Okay.”
“Kavita?”
“Hm?”
“Shall I ask you something?”
“Yeah. Go on.”
“Uhm.. You’re Laksh’s fiancée. So.. Uhm.. Is it.. Is it a love marriage?”
“Huh?”
“I mean, do you love each other?”
“Yes, and no.”
“Huh?”
Kavita smiled at Ragini’s confusion. She didn’t know why, but she felt she could pour her heart out to Ragini, something that she had not done with Swara ever.
“I mean, I love him. I always have loved him. Since childhood. He was the popular kid, as always! While I was a fat potato!” Kavita chuckled as Ragini looked at her with ‘how-is-it-even-possible’ look. Kavita had a perfect hourglass figure. Something that every girl would envy her. She had a model-like body. Good height, and s*xy figure, with elegance and class.
“I know Ragini, it’s hard for you to believe, but I was really fat as a kid.”
“Really?”
“Yes. So, me and Swara were great friends. During those times, Swara’s family stayed with Laksh’s. Swara and Laksh were not just cousins, but best buddies. I used to visit them often, owing to my friendship with Swara. We three used to play a lot. But Laksh never took much interest in me. For him, I was just Swara’s friend. Nothing more. I used to think that I was also his friend. That he used to come to play with both me and Swara. Then, when we were in 3rd, Laksh was probably in 4th. Yes. Swara’s family shifted to Budapest. They took Swara along. It was then that I realised that I wasn’t Laksh’s friend. Only Swara’s, for him.” Kavita smiled sadly.
“Then?”
“Nothing. I realised later that for me, he was more than just a friend. I had always loved him. But..”
“But?”
“Laksh doesn’t love me.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I know he doesn’t.”
“And this marriage?”
“Our families want us to get married. Business thing, you know? But I want to marry him only after he falls for me. Not before that. I want him to notice me. To talk to me. I even became this slim-thing for him. Just for him. But he never noticed me. He kinda avoids me. But it’s okay. I can’t force him to love me! Can I? No, right? So, perhaps I’ll just wait for the day when he falls for me.” Kavita smiled at Ragini.
Ragini felt really sorry for Kavita. She was a nice girl. Perhaps, the best girl for Laksh. But then, he had no feelings for her. She looked at her, who was smiling. Kavita was a bad actor. She didn’t really know to hide her pain. Her eyes spoke of the pain hidden in her heart. Love hurts. Oh yes it does. Ragini too had endured this pain. But she was lucky that Sanskar didn’t make her wait for so many years. Though away from Sanskar, she felt really blessed to have been loved by her love.
Precap: RagLak’s hot romance. (A bit mature scenes. ?)
