Sambhabana Mohanty talks about the challenges behind playing an antagonist in Radha Mohan

Sambhabana Mohanty, renowned for her portrayal of Damini in the popular series Radha Mohan, has captivated audiences with her remarkable performance. However, not many are aware that the actress initially lacked confidence in taking up the negative role. In a recent interview, Sambhabana shared insights about landing the role, her camaraderie with co-stars like Shabir Ahluwalia, and the experience of playing an antagonist.

Reflecting on her involvement in Radha Mohan, Sambhabana expressed her overwhelming emotions, considering it to be the most significant opportunity in her career. Working alongside the esteemed Shabir Ahluwalia and portraying the antagonist for the first time, she acknowledged the various layers and challenges it added to her performance and personal life. Sambhabana also praised the production house for their remarkable support and treating her like family, particularly crediting the producer-director duo, the Prateeks, for shaping her character, Damini.

When asked about accepting the project, Sambhabana revealed that she initially auditioned for the character of Radha. However, she received a response later, offering her the role of Damini, the antagonist. Admitting her lack of interest at first, she doubted her ability to portray the character convincingly. Nevertheless, with the guidance of Prateek Shah, who played a crucial role in boosting her confidence, Sambhabana ultimately accepted the role. She also emphasized that being a part of a Shabir Ahluwalia show and playing a prominent character motivated her to seize the opportunity.

Regarding her rapport with the cast, Sambhabana expressed her straightforward nature, often speaking her mind without considering the potential reactions of others. While acknowledging that not everyone may be fond of her approach, she revealed her harmonious relationship with the entire cast, direction and cinematography teams, creative team, and the hair, makeup, and wardrobe departments. Sambhabana’s penchant for creating fun banter contributes to a lively atmosphere on set, and she specifically mentioned Keerti Nagpure (who portrays Tulsi) as a close friend.

When asked about the challenges of playing an antagonist, Sambhabana admitted her initial fear upon receiving the role. She also mentioned her mother’s association with negative characters in Odia films and the TV industry, which made her doubt her suitability for the role. However, with the guidance of director Prateek Sir, she learned the nuances and intricacies of her character. Sambhabana emphasized that the portrayal of negative characters on television differs from real-life personalities, and she observed a common pattern where actors playing villains are often sweet and kind-hearted. While she doesn’t practice being mean, she acknowledged the potential for a mean streak within everyone.

Managing her personal time amid the demanding schedule of a daily soap, Sambhabana confessed that she isn’t a morning person and has always been a night owl due to her intense academic commitments since childhood. Despite the 7-7 shift, she finds it challenging to wake up before sunrise. Time management becomes essential, especially considering the daily telecast and her additional responsibilities as a PhD student in Sociology. Sambhabana emphasized the importance of maintaining a strict schedule while being proactive, enabling her to find time for everything.

Working with Shabir Ahluwalia, Sambhabana described him as a gem of a person, humble and kind despite his accomplishments and stardom. She admired his ability to create a harmonious environment on set, initiating group bonding activities and pranks. Their rapport has been excellent, and Sambhabana expressed her admiration for him, highlighting the impact he had on her during their first scene together. Shabir’s reassuring words and his inclusive use of “we” made her feel equal and supported, leaving a lasting impression.

When asked about her prospects in OTT projects or films, Sambhabana expressed her openness to diverse opportunities but emphasized the importance of a compelling concept and story. Additionally, she mentioned her discomfort with explicit scenes or revealing attire, making it a personal boundary she wouldn’t cross.
