CHAPTER 30
He kept the phone down and smiled at Swara. He came and kissed her softly on her forehead.
Sanskaar : Sorry, My love, but I have to go get dressed now. But you sleep, as much as you want. Ok?
He got up and went to the washroom and washed his face. As he was drying himself using a face towel, He stared at the mirror in shock.
Sanskaar (shocked) : WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
He recalled telling My love to Swara twice.
Sanskaar (stunned) : I love her??
He sat down on the bathroom floor in deep thought, thinking about Swara. The first time they had met in that party, The quarrels they had had, His eyes always observing Swara even when he was pursuing Ragini.
Sanskaar (wonderingly) : I love her?
He thought of their moments in Darjeeling. Their first kiss, the intense arguments that they had had.
Sanskaar : I…. love…. her?
Suddenly he heard a cough. He looked around alarmed and then guessed that Swara was probably up. Shit! He had to go to her.
Sanskaar (looking one last time at the mirror) : I love her?
He decided to focus on her at the moment and opened the door to see an awake Swara trying to get up.
Sanskaar (Stopping her from getting up on her own and helping her) : Swara! Lean back and drink the remedy that Badi Ma got you. It will help you.
Swara (groaning) : Yuck!
Sanskaar (sternly) : Stop it Swara! Now drink it.
Swara (snapping, resting her head on her knees) : Sanskaar! I don’t want to. I don’t like medicines or tablets. Please, I’ll have coffee.
Sanskaar sat next to her and raised her chin to look right into her eyes.
Sanskaar (his eyes soft, voice pleading) : Please.
Swara (unable to refuse him, nodding) : Okay!
She took the glass from him. She smelled the concoction and wrinkled her nose. He saw her reluctant face and raising her eyes to his smiled encouragingly and nodded.
Swara gave a long suffering sigh. With one of her hands, she held her nose and gulped down the potion. Finally, she set an empty glass down and Sanskaar clapped.
Sanskaar : See! That wasn’t so hard, was it?
She gave him a waspish grin and sat back. Suddenly, her eyes opened wide.
Sanskaar (seeing her wondering face, amused) : What happened?

Swara (astonished) : My hangover and headache is completely gone.
Sanskaar (chuckling) : Badi Ma’s magic. Works everytime.
She smiled at him and stepped out of bed. Suddenly she gasped in dismay.
Swara (in distress) : Badi Ma saw me? Oh no! What she must be thinking of me? Mom? Oh no! They wanted a good bahu but here I am proving them wrong. (glaring at Sanskaar, who was silently shaking with laughter at her worry) YOU ARE LAUGHING AT ME? How could you Sanskaar? This is all your fault. IF you hadn’t challenged me na, Then we wouldn’t be in this situation today.
Sanskaar (in righteous indignation) : Swara! You started arguing with me in the morning? Yaar! If I issued a challenge, does it mean you have to accept it? It is your own fault that you are not strong enough to deny me.
Swara (in mock shock) : And let you bring it up everytime, for the rest of our lives? What rot! This is your fault, Bas! Oh God. Badi Ma came here na? What she must be thinking?

As Swara turned away and muttered to herself, Sanskaar rolled his eyes. Then he smirked evilly.
Sanskaar (thinking) : You blamed me na? Now wait and see.
Sanskaar (in a fake scared and sad voice) : Actually, Swara, you have good reason to be scared.
Swara (stopping in the middle of her tirade to look at him) : What? I do?
Sanskaar : Haan! When Badi Ma came in to give the herbal remedy, She was very angry that her future bahu was going to be like this.
Swara (pacing about the room anxious) : Oh shit! I just knew it… I just knew it.. Oh no… Swara! What will happen now?
Sanskaar (mollifying tone, though he was laughing inside) : Swara, Relax! We will make her understand.
Swara gave him a withering look.
Swara : I won’t leave you today. But first, Wait.
Before Sanskaar could say anything, she ran outside shouting for Badi Ma. She collided with Ragini outside the door, but did not pay attention to her and ran downstairs.
Sanskaar sat on the bed and burst out laughing. He laughed loudly shaking the whole bed due to his mirth. Ragini entered the room looking absolutely bewildered. First she had seen Swara run outside like a mad woman shouting for Annapurna aunty. And now Sanskaar was laughing like he had gone mad.
Ragini (muttering) : Whenever these two get together, They either make trouble for each other or for themselves. God!! Ye dono bhi na! ( loudly ) Sanskaar! (receiving no response, shouting) Sanskaar! SANSKAAR!

Sanskaar gazed at her in surprise, choking back his laughter.
Sanskaar (smiing sheepishly) : Hi Ragini! When did you enter?
Ragini (amused) : When your pagal fiancee ran out of the room.
Sanskaar (wryly) : My pagal fiancee? She’s your sister as well.
Ragini (cheekily) : Exactly. When she was just my sister, She was sweet and sensible. Only after she became your fiancee, she’s become mad.
Sanskaar stared at her in amazement. Then he chuckled and motioned her to have a seat next to him. She smiled and sat down.
Sanskaar : You’re really cheeky. You know that?
Ragini laughed.
Ragini : Yeah! Swara also tells this. But vaise, Where did she run off to? I came to give her these clothes. Pandit ji is coming now to finalise the wedding date.
Sanskaar (surprised) : Accha? Then I have to go get ready. And your sister, Your sister is being pranked by me.
Ragini (delighted) : Really? What did you do?
Sanskaar smiled diabolically and told her everything. She gasped in sympathy and chuckled.
Ragini : Seriously? Meri pyaari behen ko kyun pareshaan kar rahe ho? Poor girl. Badi Ma is going to have the shock of her life now. Swara never could bear it if someone was angry at her.
Sanskaar turned around thoughtfully.
Sanskaar (slight regret in his tone) : Really? So she felt bad? Oh no! I didn’t mean to make her upset. I should go and apologise….
He stopped talking as he saw Ragini smile knowingly at him.
Sanskaar ( a bit waspishly, because he didn’t understand why she was smiling) : What?
Ragini (shaking her head) : Nothing! (she kept a bag on a damask sofa in his room) I’m going downstairs to help Ma. You get dressed. (As she’s stepping out the room, she calls him again) Sanskaar!
Sanskaar turned expectantly.

Ragini ( a grateful smile) : As much as you irritate each other, I’m glad you both are together. Your love for her is clearly visible.
She left the room leaving a shell-shocked Sanskaar frozen.
Sanskaar (perplexed) : Love? Again, that word? This word has come entirely too often today. How can I love Miss Gadodia? She is so irritating. She is pretty, of course.
He smiled and remembered her beguiling and enigmatic smile, the way her hair danced as she walked.
Sanskaar (dreamily) : Not pretty, My Swara is beautiful. In my eyes, she’s the most perfect woman there is.
He shook himself and looked like he had gone out of his mind.
Sanskaar : SANSKAAR MAHESHWARI! What’s wrong with you? Why are you thinking like this?
He suddenly remembered what Swara had told him about love.
Love is…. Love is a very simple emotion reallyWhat makes it the most complicated thing of all is the power that it has. Love can destroy you or make you. It is really difficult to understand this funny thing. Love is what you feel when you’re attracted to a person but don’t know why. You don’t know why her pain becomes yours. You don’t know why her dreams are yours.
Sanskaar remembered the day when Swara was shivering due to the thunderstorm. He thought about how he himself had felt that time. He had felt terror in his heart at her pain and was broken hearted. He thought of all the moments they had spent together and realised that he had every memory etched into his brain.
Their first dance, Their dance in Darjeeling. Their kiss, The game in Darjeeling, Swara announcing that she would marry him.
Swara… Swara… Swara…
Sanskaar smiled. It had happened. He didn’t know how. He didn’t know when. But he could no longer deny it.
HE LOVED HER.

Sanskaar Maheshwari, The suave businessman, adverse to love had finally fallen in love with Swara Gadodia!
Sanskaar (whispering) : I love her…. (slightly louder) I love her… (even louder) I LOVE SWARA!
He jumped excitedly and smiled goofily. He had to go and tell her. Right now. He had to go and tell her.
He stopped and looked at himself. He was disheveled in appearance. He smiled sheepishly. He could not offer a declaration of love like that.
Sanskaar quickly took a bath and changed into a black T-shirt with a blue blazer. He applied cologne and set his hair.
Sanskaar (nervous) : Are you ready Sanskaar? Why are you nervous? You are a famous business tycoon. You can do this. Bade Papa, Please help me….
He froze, all the happiness draining away from him.
Bade Papa…

He turned to look at a miniature of DP near his bed.
Sanskaar (softly) : How could I forget? How did I forget the future?
He came closer and picked up the miniature and smiled wistfully.
Sanskaar : Bade Papa! How could I forget? I was going to tell her I loved her. And if she replied back in the affirmative, If she had told me she loved me back, It would have made my day. I would have been so happy. Ecstatic even. But then, How would I face death? After experiencing happiness, how will I ever get the courage to come to you?
He closed his eyes in pain.
Sanskaar : This is the truth of my life. I love her. I love her so much it hurts. I never realised it until now. But I have loved her for a long time now. Swara, She is my heart and soul. But my life, That is yours Bade Papa. I can never exceed your acheivements. This is another truth.
He stood silently, clutching the miniature tightly, trying to hold his emotions together. He finally opened his eyes, emptier than before, yet filled with a certain determination and fullness.
Sanskaar (determinedly ignoring the sinking feeling in his heart) : I can’t tell Swara! I can’t tell I love her. If I don’t, At least I can assume that she doesn’t love me back. And even though that won’t make me happy, It is better. I don’t have place for happiness in my life. Only content. And I will be satisfied with her.
He took out his phone and held the miniature in the other. He opened his gallery to a picture of Swara.
Sanskaar : Despite my reluctance and determination, I fell in love with you Swara! You are my everything now. But only for a short while. I won’t be there with you forever. And that is why, I cannot tell you how much I love you.
He stared at both the pictures in his hand. He stared and stared until he could no longer bear it. Then he closed his eyes and set the miniature down and switched off his phone.
A silent tear slipped from his eye. He wiped the tear away with force.
Sanskaar : NO SANSKAAR! You can’t do this. Control Sanskaar! Control.
He took few heavy breaths and calmed his aching heart as much as it could. Then he opened his eyes.

Just then,
Swara ( from downstairs) : SANSKAAR! HOW DARE YOU? I AM GOING TO KILL YOU…
Despite the despair he felt, He smiled. Swara could always make him smile.
He began going downstairs, crouching near the pillars, staring at the indignant Swara.
He walked slowly, so as to allow God to give him strength to face her. But he couldn’t take his eyes off her. As she paced about the room talking to Badi Ma, Mom and Ma, his eyes followed her.
Finally, he came down and Swara saw him.
Swara (with righteous anger) : Sanskaar! You lied to me? You told Badi Ma was angry with me… Do you have any idea just how angry I am? Or how anxious I was?
Sanskaar (holding both his ears and smiling sweetly): Accha! Sorry? I only wanted to prank you.
Swara smiled at him and hit him on his arm playfully.
Sumi : Swara beta! See, He said sorry. Now you go and get ready, fast. Pandit Ji must be coming now.
Swara : Ji Ma! I’ll go and come down quickly.
She nodded once at Sanskaar, who tried to keep his eyes from following her. Thankfully Laksh entered then, yawning loudly, providing a much needed distraction to Sanskaar.
Sanskaar (with a little bit of relief mixed with surprise) : Laksh! How come you slept so late?
Laksh looked at him incredulously.
Laksh : You’re kidding me right?
Sanskaar (taken aback) : Me? What are you talking about?
Laksh (giving out a long suffering sigh) : LAst night, You both drove me crazy. First you made me run around the house chasing after you 3 times, Then calling ME ganda ladka, when all I did was help you. You even pushed me out because that girl started crying. Seriously bhai, Aisa koi karta hai kya?
Sanskaar (chuckling, while everyone began laughing) : Sorry! I don’t remember half the things that happened last night. But I’m sure we were awful. But you taking care of us, We should have taken a video. That would have been amazing.
As they all started laughing, Sanskaar suddenly remembered that he was thinking about something from last night.
Sanskaar (thinking) : I was thinking about something na? What was it? That call from Mr Raj made me forget. Anyways, Leave it. It’ll come back to me sometime or the other.
Sumi (shaking Sanskaar out of his reverie) : Oh Look! Pandit Ji has come.
They all greeted him and Sanskaar bent down to take his blessings. As he went to sit down, he saw Swara descending wearing a simple orange and red salwar with her hair in plait. He was mesmerized and continued staring at her, a smile on his face until Uttara uttered his name.
Uttara : Bhai! Sanskaar? (seeing Sanskaar finally turn towards her) Finally! Sit down… Swara is coming over here only.
Swara, overhearing the last part blushed slightly and sat next to sanskaar after touching the Pandit’s feet.
Pandit Ji : There are 2 auspicious times available : In 4 days or in 2 weeks. Which one would you prefer?
Sujata : The children have to decide.I don’t mind any.
Sanskaar and Swara stared at each other.
Sanskaar : Mom, We will marry in…
Swara (smiling) : 4 days.
Sanskaar smiled back, though he was going to tell 2 weeks. He needed to learn to be away from Swara. She was like a drug, sweet and intoxicating.
But there was nothing he could do now.
Annapurna : 4 days it is.
She thanked the Pandit Ji and Swara and Sanskaar took everyone’s blessings.
Annapurna : Come! We will perform an Aarti and pray to God!
They went to the Mandir and Swara performed the Aarti!
