Sanskaar : Mr Maheshwari and…
Swara (happily) : I!
THE END
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
I sat back and stared at the laptop screen. A small smile tugged at my lips which gradually grew into a grin. I read the words THE END once, then another time and a third time too.
I could have gone on reading the words forever. The feel you get when you successfully accomplish something, There’s nothing like it. I now realise how my father feels when he sees his novels in a store. The exhilaration in your heart, Absolutely wonderful. I definitely recommend everyone trying writing a story at least once.
I stared at the screen again and frowned. There was something missing. I typed a little more and then smiled satisfied. I saw my name right next to the title and smiled a little more. “Perfect!”, I exclaimed.
“Anjali!”, My mom called from downstairs. “Come down. What are you doing upstairs?”
“Coming Mom!” I shouted out and shut my laptop quickly in case someone saw the story. Perhaps it’s weird, but I just wanted to keep Mr Maheshwari and I to myself a little more. Sort of like keeping a chocolate inside until you’re alone so that you don’t have to give it to anyone.
Anyways, I never told anyone about the story. It was my secret… Just for a little while longer.
“Anjali! Where are you? Come quick”, My mother shouted again. I rolled my eyes. I loved my mom but at times, She could be really annoying.
I grinned and ran down.

“Mrs Saanvi Laksh Maheshwari! Why on Earth are you troubling your poor daughter?”, I asked, pouting at my mother. She replied scoffing, ” Poor you, My foot. Anjali Laksh Maheshwari, Aren’t you the director of the play? How could you just disappear like that then? Swara and Sanskaar have been waiting for their lines since that time.”
I turned to my Badi Ma and Bade Papa who seemed to be in the middle of an argument. I turned back to my mother. “They seem too busy to be waiting for me.” My father entered and chuckled, “30 years of marriage and counting, Still my bhai and bhabhi keep arguing.”
Swara Badi Ma heard and turned, ” Laksh, Shut up. Anjali dear, Why are we doing the play? Surely you can find someone younger. Samar and Aanya could do it. Why us? ”
I shook my head. That’s what the argument was about. “Badi Ma! It’s your thirtieth wedding anniversary. I’m not going to have someone else have all the fun. Come on! You’ll make a lovely Kate!”
She glared at me. “Taming of the shrew? Really Anjali?”

As my uncle and father began laughing, I tried to convince Badi Ma why Taming of the shrew was an amazing play to be enacted. “Come on Badi Ma! You get to throw stuff at bade papa! ” I slyly looked at him and he scowled like this had never occurred to him.
Badi Ma too stood quietly thinking, then a sly smile came on her face. ” You’re right! Sanskaar, Dekh lena! I’m going to be the best shrew possible.”
She kissed my cheek and then walked to her room happily while a slightly nervous look came on my Bade Papa’s face as he followed her. I watched them both with a smile.
Though, Mom and Papa loved each other with a passion that would be really impossible to explain, it was my Swara Badi ma and Sanskaar Bade Papa’s story that really touched me. I mean, Of course I love my parents. I would do anything for them. But something about my aunt’s love story gripped me. I couldn’t let go of the idea to rewrite it. I wanted their story to be immortal.
A story of the ages.
Romeo and Juliet.
Odysseus and Penelope.
Helen and Paris.
Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase.
I could go on and on. My parents raised Avni and me to read and love books from an early age. Everyone loved to go out to park but I used to be satisfied with a book in my hand. I’ve read so many love stories over the years and really wanted my family’s love stories to be part of them.
I began writing with the sole idea of showing everyone how perfect my family is. My lovely Dadis who are no more with us, My nani who loves to pamper us still though even Pakhi, the youngest is 20 now and the eldest Samar is married to the love of his life, Aanya. My aunts and uncles who love each other even as they bicker and us cousins, who have never known what it means to not love.
I wanted everyone to know the power of love. How it can solve even the most serious matters or trivial matters. But once I started, people’s opinions didn’t matter. I wanted to write because I love to. I wanted to continue writing because I wanted my story to be good. To be as satisfactory as possible.
Swara Badi Ma once told me, “Any form of creative work, be it a drawing, an architectural plan or a written piece of work, They are all art work. They are projections of your feelings and thoughts. Don’t ever suppress them. Find your inspiration and let them lead you.”
She was damn right. I found my inspiration and I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
FEW WEEKS LATER
I actually wanted that last sentence to be my ending, But then I added this last bit so that you can see what became of my Maheshwari family.
I stood at the top of the stairs watching the guests come in and wish Badi Ma and Bade Papa. They looked so elegant and wonderful today. Sanskaar Bade Papa in a midnight blue sherwani that contrasted well with his salt and pepper hair and my beautiful Swara Badi Ma in a shimmery baby pink and silver saree with her hair tied up in a simple side braid. Both of them were nearly sixty yet today, they looked younger than my 21 years.
I saw Avni walk towards me and smiled at her. “Hey!”, I said and she smiled back. “What are you doing up here?”, She asked me. I looked down again and shrugged. “Just observing, I guess.”
“Come downstairs. It’s not fair to keep all the men waiting. Let everyone see Anjali.”
I rolled my eyes. “I think the boys will be too busy seeing you.” It was true. Avni was by far, the prettiest girl in our family. She had inherited our father’s slightly sandy hair which was of the softest texture. Her face had high cheekbones and a dimple that brought everyone to their knees.
Avni shrugged. “Well, Who cares? I’ve got the best husband in the world. I don’t need anyone else.”
I smiled again. I couldn’t seem to stop. “I doubt mom will agree with the best husband part. She’ll tell Papa is the best. ”
“That’s wrong too, since clearly Samar is the best.”

We heard our sister-in-law Aanya and laughed. She walked towards us chuckling. “Probably Mom would tell that Papa is the best?” She said referring to her mother-in-law.
“Swara Badi Ma will trounce us all if we don’t vote for Sanskaar Bade Papa”, Avni joked. “Speaking of which, If we don’t get downstairs soon, she may trounce us anyways. ”
Agreeing with Avni, The three of us went and joined the party. We reached just as Badi Ma took the stage and thanked everyone for coming today.
“Thank you everyone for making my thirtieth anniversary with Sanskaar so wonderful. Thirty years is a huge milestone, Isn’t it? But I have no idea how the years went by. It feels like yesterday that Sanskaar and I held Samar in our hands and today, He is married and has his own law firm. Sahir is running Maheshwari Industries and my dear Antara and Avni have started a fashion boutique together. The years seem to have gone by in a blur yet they have given me stupendous gifts. All my children, my sisters, my brothers, my Ma, Everyone!”
She looked at all of us and beamed at us all. I smiled hard back. She continued, “I’ve learnt how to be a daughter, a daughter-in-law, a wife, a sister, a sister-in-law, a mother, an aunt and hopefully, i’ll learn soon what it means to be a grandmother. But the most important thing I’ve learnt is this : I’ve learnt what it means to love. I’ve learnt what it means to be loved. These thirty years weren’t easy and had its ups and downs for sure, But having Sanskaar and everyone by my side, I knew I wouldn’t fail. I love you Sanskaar! You know exactly how much I do. Thank you for giving me this family.”
I went and stood near my father who put his arm around me and hugged me sideways. My mom joined us and kissed the top of my head. We watched Sanskaar Bade Papa kiss Swara Badi Ma’s hands and take the mic from her.
“My lovely wife has told everything I wanted to tell. I only have to amend one thing in her speech. It’s I who has to thank you Swara. Meri zindagi mein aakar, Tumne mera gham door kar diya! Toote kaanch sa tha mein, kohinoor kar diya.”
We all clapped hard for him then. Badi Ma seemed nearly in tears. Bade Papa hugged her tight and we all clapped once more.
The rest of the night was fun. The play was a smashing success. The dinner was delicious and the dancing was a riot. But the best part was later, when all the festivities were over. I was in my room when I heard a soft voice say I love you. It seemed to be coming from the garden. Curious, I looked down from the window and found the eldest Maheshwaris hugging each other.
I chuckled. Thirty years and counting, Yet they cannot leave each other even for a second. No wonder they were my idols.
Every writer needs inspiration.
And I found mine.
