Sayyam’s jaw dropped open, “You’ll drive me there…why?”
“I haven’t visited her for a while, and I’m tired of Yuvani asking me to try on different dresses.”
Sayyam nodded slowly, his eyebrow still raised. Something had changed, he could feel it; not that he was complaining…but he could get used to this side of Krishna.
“After you,” Sayyam gestured toward the door. Krishna rolled her eyes, walking ahead of him.
—–
“Is everything ok?” Sayyam glanced at Krishna as she pulled out of the driveway.
“Yeah, why?” Krishna’s eyebrows furrowed together.
“No, I just- you’re acting a bit different.”
“Oh that…” Krishna smiled to herself, “this is how I act with stubborn children.”
Sayyam smirked, feigning an expression of shock, “Is that all I am? A stubborn kid?”
Krishna chuckled, her soft laugh filling the car, but she didn’t respond.
They sat in silence for the rest of the car ride; and Sayyam was surprised at how comfortable he felt with her.
Krishna parked when they reached, and both of them exited the car. Sayyam gazed uneasily at the orphanage; he was never going to feel comfortable entering this place.
The car beeped as Krishna locked it, which jolted Sayyam out of his trance. He followed after Krishna and entered the building, letting out a deep sigh.
—–
“Krishna didi!” Anjali exclaimed as they walked into the nurses’ room.
“Anjali!” Krishna grinned, hugging the girl. The two pulled away, and Anjali caught sight of Sayyam.
A deafening silence penetrated the room, and Sayyam rushed forward to hug her, almost tripping over due to his injured leg.
“I’m sorry princess,” Sayyam kissed the top of her head.
“It’s ok bhaiya,” Anjali’s eyes were shining in happiness, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth.”
Sayyam sat down on a stool next to her, holding her hand. “Anjali, I promise you, I’ll always care for you; I’ll be there for you. There’s not a force in the world that can stop me from
being by your side.
Anjali smiled wistfully, as if she knew something he didn’t, and moved forward to hug him, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders. “Thank you Bhaiya,” she grinned, leaning
back into the bed.
“How do you do it?” Sayyam tilted his head to the side, trying to understand the girl in front of him. “You- you’re so optimistic about everything.”
“Bhaiya, life’s too unpredictable to be anything but happy. Remember when we were younger? I was five years old and you were only sixteen. Everything used to seem so bleak and hopeless, but look now; you have a family of your own. You have a home. I’m an orphan, I don’t have a family, but I can’t assume that I was abandoned because I was not wanted. I just have to hope for the best, I have to live life for what it is; because it’s the small things in life that count. It’s not about the family that I lost, but it’s about the family I gained here- at the orphanage.”
Sayyam looked at her in awe, “When did you grow up so fast princess?”
Anjali beamed and reached out for Krishna’s hand, pulling her closer. “I’ve always been this way, didn’t you know?” she winked at them mischievously. Sayyam smirked, while Krishna laughed quietly.
“Krishna didi?” Anjali looked at Krishna closely, “are you wearing makeup?”
Krishna blushed, while Sayyam rolled his eyes. “Umm- I might be getting engaged tomorrow,” Krishna bit her lip.
“What!” Anjali shrieked in excitement, “really? To whom?”
“Yeah,” Krishna raised her eyebrows, “to Yuvaan.”
‘Yuvaan?” Anjali frowned.
“Yup, remember I told you about him?”
“Oh.” The girl nodded in understanding.
Just then, Krishna’s phone rang, and she picked it up, stepping away for a minute.
Anjali turned to Sayyam, an eyebrow raised. “Yuvaan who?”
Sayyam held in his laughter, glancing at Anjali, “you weren’t listening when Krishna told you about him, were you.”
Anjali shook her head, “Nope.”
Sayyam nodded in mock seriousness, “Well, he’s my step-brother…”
Anjali’s mouth fell open, while Sayyam looked on curiously, “Everything ok princess?”
“I guess, I didn’t expect this…I was thinking- never mind” she stopped her sentence midway, looking at him sheepishly.
Krishna walked up to them, “Sayyam, we have to go back, Suhani aunty called.”
Sayyam nodded, and he ruffled Anjali’s hair, “I’ll come back soon, okay?”
Anjali gave him the thumbs up and raised her arm to punch him playfully on the arm.
“Anjali! Don’t…he’s hurt there.” Krishna interrupted, her eyes wide.
Sayyam looked at Krishna suspiciously, before looking back down at Anjali and giving her a hi-fi.
“See you later Sayyam bhaiya, bye Krishna didi!”
Sayyam and Krishna waved at her warmly, before leaving the orphanage and getting back in the car.
—–
“How did you know?” Sayyam asked her once they were in the car.
“How did I know what? Krishna responded, as she started the car.
“How did you know that my arm is hurt? I’ve been wearing full sleeves”
“I-uh…” Krishna inhaled sharply, her eyes not leaving the road.
“You were the one who treated me weren’t you,” Sayyam closed his eyes in realization, “that’s why you were so guilty.”
“Huh?” Krishna’s eyes narrowed in confusion.
“You only said sorry, because I got hurt and you felt that it was your fault…if nothing had happened to me, you wouldn’t have cared.”
“Sayyam, that doesn’t even make sense!” Krishna shook her head in frustration.
“No, I get it,” Sayyam looked out the window, “my feelings obviously don’t matter.”
Krishna scoffed, “Really? Are we doing this now? You know what, I don’t care for your feelings, I don’t care for you! Why should I?” Krishna bit the inside of her cheek, knowing she was saying too much again.
They both huffed, stubbornly refusing to even look at each other. As soon as they reached the house, Sayyam got out, slamming the door behind him, and stormed away, limping slightly.Krishna leaned back in her seat, unable to comprehend what had just happened. Why was this guy so hard to understand?
