Chapter 6:

“Because of you,” I stated.
He looked at me, as if asking me ‘why’ and ‘what’ and ‘how.’
“Look, you’re about to leave three days from now, I can’t just be with you all the time, then you’ll leave. It’ll be so hard in my part. It’ll only make me miss you more and more,” I said, trying to come up with an Alibi.
“You know it’s my job, right? And whatever happens, I’m your bestfriend. So even if I’m only here once a year, please do remember, I won’t forget you,” he explained.
Tears were about to fall from both of our eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” I said jokingly, trying to lighten up our mood.

“So you know, I’m leaving after two days…” he said the day after.
“Shut up. You don’t have to tell it over and over again!” I replied.
“Okay okay!” he said, “I haven’t given you something since I went home.”
He reached for his pocket, and pulled out a rectangular lavender box.
“Turn around,” he whispered.
I saw him opened the box, and I turned my back at him. I felt a chain touch the side of my neck, and a big circle pendant hung along my chest.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“Can’t you state the obvious?” he joked.
“I know it’s a necklace, but what is this for?” I told him.
“Go and open it,” he instructed.
I opened the necklace. It has two sides. The left one was a picture of the two of us, almost two years ago. The other side was two clocks, with different time. I quickly recognized the first clock, it was the time here in Mumbai.
“What was the second clock for?” I asked him.
“That’ll be the time in the country we’ll be in, you’ll change it every now and then, currently, the time there was US time,” he explained.
“And why do I need to know their time?” I asked him, my eyes still on the pendant.
“For you to know that whatever happens, wherever the two of us are, we’re together,” he replied.
I turned to look at him, and smiled.
“Thank you.”

We were silent for a moment until someone broke it.
“Annika! Lunch is ready!” Gauri shouted from the kitchen.
“We’re coming!” Shivaay replied, “Let’s go. You don’t want to starve, do you?”
“Of course not!” I said, grabbing his wrist and pulling him.
We went downstairs, and saw Gauri grinning at us.
“Fooodddd!” Shivaay and I shouted in unison.
Gauri giggled at us.
We were eating when Gauri spoke.
“You two looks so perfect for each other” she teased, with both her palms stuck together.
Shivaay and I just looked at her, with question marks written all over our face.
“You should try dating!” she said.
I mentally face palm-ed myself. What was my sister doing in the first place. I kept my face looking at the ground, since I know I was blushing.
“Come on, Shivaay, ask my sister out! Don’t you find her pretty?” she said.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Shivaa looked at me. Oh my gosh. I don’t know what to do. How can I stop my sister?!?!
I kicked her from under the table.
“I’m done eating. I’m off to sleep,” I said.
I stood up, and placed my plate on the sink, then headed up. I wasn’t really planning to sleep. I just wanted to get out of that.
Why does Gauri have to say those really embarrassing things?
What does Shivaay think of me now?!
My sister, really. Sometimes, I can’t understand her.
