Urvashi Dholakia: Breaking Stereotypes Beyond Komolika and No more Negative Roles in TV and OTT

Urvashi Dholakia, widely celebrated for her iconic portrayal of Komolika in the TV show Kasautii Zindagi Kay, boasts a substantial fan base. Known for her impeccable fashion sense and timeless beauty, she continues to captivate audiences with her role in Pushpa Impossible.

In a candid interview with Hindustan Times, Urvashi addressed the misconception that she is confined to her Komolika persona.

“Where is the creativity of the producers and creative directors when they can’t think of me beyond that one role?” Urvashi questioned. She expressed that this typecasting has overshadowed her diverse performances in recent years, which is a source of frustration for her.

Urvashi explained that her sporadic appearances are due to her search for more exciting opportunities, as she finds repetitive roles uninteresting. Highlighting the issue of being typecast, she stated, “It’s like saying Rekha ne Umrao Jaan kia toh bas that is it, that is the peak of everything. No, it doesn’t stop there!”

Despite the challenges of shedding her Komolika image, she appreciates the enduring popularity of Komolika memes and reels. “But, at the same time, I also want to be recognized for other roles that I have done,” she remarked, expressing her desire for recognition beyond her famous villainous role.

Urvashi hopes that audiences will accept her in a variety of roles. She is particularly pleased to have the opportunity to portray a positive character, feeling that this is a significant step forward. Being referred to by her character’s name, Devi Singh Shikhavat, feels like progress to her. She is enthusiastic about taking on more such roles but has decided to steer clear of negative characters on television.

In her role on Pushpa Impossible, Urvashi shared, “There’s nothing more for me as an actor when it comes to playing a negative role now. Even if I take up one character, people will start comparing it with Komolika.”

Regarding her interest in digital media, Urvashi revealed that limited opportunities have held her back. She felt particularly disheartened when she was labeled as an overexposed TV personality last year. She questioned, “Which OTT platform has a show which does not have a TV face? So, why would you tell me that? Everyone is there, then why am I being treated differently?”

Urvashi Dholakia’s versatility extends beyond Kasautii Zindagi Kay. She showcased her range by winning Bigg Boss 6 and participating in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 11.
