RIDDHIMA’S POV
I was watching YouTube videos in my room when my mom knocked on my door.
“We need to talk,” she said and naturally everything I’d ever done flashed in front of my eyes.
“About what?” I asked hesitantly, shutting my laptop.
“We want you to meet a guy,” she said without any preamble and all will to live left me. Not this crap again.
“How many times do I have to tell you: I don’t want to get married,” I told her sternly. I couldn’t believe we were having this conversation yet again.
“It’s just one guy. Going out with him won’t kill you. Besides, he’s hot as hell,” she said with a giggle.
“Ew, mom, I don’t wanna hear you calling guys half your age hot,” I protested but sat up to see the picture she was showing me. I would never admit it to her, but she was right. This guy was hot. Or he would be, if he lost the beard. Which still didn’t mean I could agree to this.
“No way. That guy looks way older than me,” I lied, revelling on the fact that she didn’t know I already had a boyfriend who was five years older than me. But we were just friends, at least as far as my family was concerned.
“His name is Vansh. He runs his own business,” she said, ignoring me.
“Business of what?” I asked.
“We know his family too. They’re nice people,” she stated, ignoring me yet again though this time it was probably because she hadn’t bothered to find out.
“I don’t care. I’m not meeting anyone named Vansh,” I announced.
“What is wrong with the name Vansh?” she frowned.
“Remember in high school I had this classmate named Vansh and he was a total creep?” I asked, unconvincingly.
She put her hands on her hips and admonished me without words. I sighed, realizing I had officially lost this fight. Whatever. I will go meet this guy, reject him and then never give him another thought. How hard could it be? (Hint: very hard, as I was about to find out.)

“No, babe, it’s not a date. You know what my mom is like! I’m just doing it for her peace of mind. Trust me, you have nothing to worry about,” I said to Kabir on the phone later that night, trying to make him understand.
”That’s what you always say but how long am I supposed to put with this? You meet up with different guys all the time whereas I haven’t even seen you in a week!” he said, sounding exasperated.
“I know, I’m sorry, but I had deadlines. We can meet this weekend, I promise,” I tried to pacify him.
”Okay. See you then,” he sighed.
”I love you!” I said but he’d already hung up. I felt a sudden surge of annoyance and not for the first time. This matchmaking gig was interfering with everything in my life. I had to put an end to it, I decided but my chain of thought was interrupted by the beep of my phone. My best friend, Ahana, had texted me.
Her: heyyyyy s*xy lady, wanna go out 2morrow???
Me: cant, mom set me up for another 1 of these blo*dy blind dates
Her: u lucky cow!!! does that mean ur finally gonna dump Kunj?!
Me: no & i know u know his name is kabir…
